Well during my recent trip i figured out i wasn't going happy longterm with my vortex diamondback 20×60×60 spotting scope. I sold it on craigslist for 250.00 yesterday. Anyway im looking at putting another 750.00 dollars or so with it and getting another spotting scope or just a really good pair of binoculars and calling it good . So a couple of questions as i also really just found out . There's the stuff you see on tv/utube and then there's the real world guys who just go hunting and kill stuff. How many of you carry binoculars and a spotting scope? Should i continue to carry both ? Or have both and leave the spotter in the truck ? Screenshot_20201013-152423_Chrome.jpganyway im thinking of this spotting scope the one for 999.99 any and all criticism is 100% welcomed as always

When I am out activity hunting I just have a good pair of 10x42 binoculars with me. I can scan the hunting area quickly and in the mountains you are usually close enough that you can tell if the animal is worth going after with them.

I had a pair of Leupold Cascades and they worked great but they were getting a little loose in the pivot so I sent them in. Leupold send be back a pair of their BXI's. But in the meantime a member on here posted about a great deal on some Swaro's so that is what I pack around now. I put the Leopold's into my vehicle so that I always have a pair of binoculars in it.

Now if I am helping someone on a hunt where I am not packing a rifle I'll carry both a spotter and my binoculars. I picked up a Vortex Razor 20-60x85 for a great price and have been completely satisfied with it.

I always carry a very nice pair of 10x42. Only time my spotter leaves the truck is during scouting time and if i don't have a rifle on my pack, because I'm helping my son or a buddy out.

I have heard a lot of guys really liking the 15X on a tripod as a meet in the middle.

Scott asked the first question that needs an answer, I have 12 x 50 razers and 10 x 50 razers plus a razer 20 x 60 spotting scope just depends on the trip and hunt

What do you currently have for Binos?
Crappy pair of Nikon's my wife bought me 25 years ago when we were dating. Which is why upgrading my glass is now my first priority .
I can't buy it all at once buy going to start buying what i can when i can . I plan on applying for something again next year so 1000 for glass now and applying for tags in January- April is about all i can swing.

What and where do you hunt?

Wyoming antelope is one thing but elk in the mountains is something else.

You will use your binos at a 10/1 ratio on most western hunts. If you can only pick one get the best binos you can, put them on a tripod if you don't have a spotter for glassing at distance if you haven't gotten a spotter as well.

For instance, I use Sig 11x binos for all of my hunts which I can tell for the most part if a buck/bull is big enough to put a play on. Now once it get's past 1500 yards I need the spotter but when you get into those distances camp usually get's pulled to move closer anyway.

Well im glad i asked , its probably smarter just to get a good set of binoculars then . My buddy had a 10 x 42 pair of Leupold's ( not sure of the model ) and they were pretty awesome. My spotter was only good to about 30 power and not as clear as his binos

Imo you can get pretty awesome binoculars and a good spotting scope for 1k. I carry vortex viper 10x and love them. My leupold spotter was under 300 and is very clear at 45 power. I have looked through much more expensive glass and really don't notice enough difference to justify more expense.

I have a pair of 10x50 swarovski slc that I always thought were pretty awesome.(and they are)

my brother bought a pair of 8x42 vortex razor binos last year and from looking through the two, I must say they are pretty comparable imho.

my swarovs are a wee bit better in low light but the difference is slight

I would suggest investing in a good set of binos then saving for a good spotter. IMO if you buy a low grade bino and spotter you won’t be happy. You’re better off spending a little more on high quality glass. I’d second the Vortex Viper or Razor 10x42 and the Swaros are great glass but expensive. Personally I think you get more for your dollar with Vortex. Good luck!

I've got 3 pair of higher end glass all in 10x42, Maven B.1 are the best of the 3.

Definitely get good binos before worrying about a spotter.

Im on it , i might wait and see if there's any good deals coming up on black Friday. It seems like everyone consensus to go with the 10 x42 ? I kind of liked the idea of having 15 x56 and just meet in the middle. I guess the negative to that would be carrying the extra weight and not being able to zoom down ? Im all in on the binoculars first though 👍

my 10 x50s are a bit bulky for carrying when hiking but worth it ,to me, for the superior light gathering in lowlight situations.

if you are a guy who must be on the mtn from first to last light , I'd go for the 10x50s. if you are a guy who likes to sleep in or dawdle around camp sipping coffee ,I'd recommend the 8x42s.
