I don't post a lot but I can't pass this one up.... Laramie is not a good retirement home for a hunter like you, try California or maybe New Jersey!

As long as long winters and wind don't bother you it's great. UW town has all the perks and problems associated with a college town. Quiet in summer, hectic and busy during semesters.
And yes good local beer.

And plenty of drive up liquor stores lol. It's definitely a college town that likes to party but it has it's other residents as well.

Laramie is my home town... I would live there again if the cost of living wasn't so high. My Nebraska 150k house would go for 350-400k there. There is fantastic hunting and fishing. Very short drive to great camping in the mountains. Lots of good local businesses. Short drive to Cheyenne and reasonable drive to Denver if you feel the need to visit a bigger city.

I guess retirement locations are very personal decisions but Laramie would not be on my short list. What would be the attraction?

Surrounded by great hunting, fishing, mountains, and the entertainment that a college town provides... not for everyone but I sure think it's fun.

And the search is just the SE area. As that supports some duck hunting which is very high on the list. Smaller towns of population less than 1000 are definitely on the table. But the closer to good duck/goose hunting the better.

If waterfowl is a main consideration, I'd look elsewhere. Seems like most birds are gone by the end of Oct or the first hard freeze. When I lived there the best part about Laramie was seeing it in the review mirror. Regarding hunting and fishing, more opportunity on the western side of the state as well as around Sheridan, Cody and Lander...

Agree on the waterfowl hunting... It can be very good in the valley early but it's over fast. The Torrington area is much better for ducks and geese as well as pheasant.

Birds are paramount. In GOD's ironic twist, I now have the best bird dog I'll ever have. Wish I had him in my 20s.
If Dr's ever get my spine were my day is not terrible, miserable or horrific , I will have a blast. Right now I have more days I can't get out of bed than days I can....

You got the surrounded part right. Hunting/fishing in the mountains around Laramie and you'll be surrounded by folks from Cheyenne, Laramie and Colorado...and mucho truck & ATV/UTV traffic.

Like any place, you get out of the hunt what you put in. Get away from roads and it's nowhere near like Colorado.
Small town feel with friendly folks.

IMO, there are a lot worse places in Wyoming to live than Laramie but I also believe there are a lot better.
