I'm new to the site, but was wondering everyones thoughts on Jim Shockeys Gold loose powder? I had been using it for several seasons and haven't had any issues with it, but when I did some research for my upcoming elk hunt on powder the reviews on this stuff were very bad. Any input would be appreciated.

I have never used it and dont know anything about it. I guess if its working and you like it it must be ok. I use 777 fffg. Alot of guys seem to like blackhorn 209 but the way I understand it you have to use 209 primers and may need a different breech plug for it. What ML do you have and want are the ML regs where you hunt and are going hunting?

I use APP and some surplus military BP I bought a while back. Never used it as I thought it was too expensive. I've also heard that it is the same as APP just re-labeled. Not sure how true that is, but I do shoot with a lot of BP shooters and that is what they say.
I use a CVA Optima and I am planning on elk hunting in Colorado, which requires only loose powder, no sabots, and iron sights only. And yes Im pretty sure APP and Jim Shockeys are the same powder, but with a sponsor.

I never could get consistent velocities with JSG. Blackhorn 209 is the stuff, don't even mess with anything else if it is legal where you are hunting.

For JSG, I'd have to look that up. BH209 was rock solid at the same loads and velocities.
BH209 sweet spot in my Knight DISC Extreme was 80-85 grains of powder with a 460 grain No Excuses bullet (50 caliber).

Once I find the load my rifle likes, I weight the load. When I go for the hunt, I weigh out about 25 loads into waterproof vials for the hunt.

You can use Blackhorn in CO since you can use a 209 there. I have herd you need to use regular shotgun 209 with it and do not use the ML 209 primers. You will need to look into if your breech plug is compatible with Blackhorn or not. I think the ones for Blackhorn have a bigger hole? In my 50 cal Knight disc extreme I use 100 gr of 777 fffg and 300 gr Hornady FPB's in CO and it shoots well with that combo. I have stuck with the 777 powder because I cant use a 209 here in WA and I wanted to be able to use 1 powder for everything. The 777 burns pretty clean with a 209 but not nearly as clean with musket caps. Personally I think the FFFg powder burns a bit cleaner and hotter and you get a little more out of it then FFg.

Blackhorn 209 is great powder. It is amazingly consistent for me. I shoot a TC Encore with 250 shockwave and black sabot and get inch groups at 100 and am consistently 3 inches low at 200. This year sighting in I took a shot at the 300 yard gong and rang it first shot with about 28 inches of holdover.
With BH 209 you will not get consistent ignition with muzzleloader primers and must use the real shotgun primers. I know that with CVA you will need a different breech to shoot it.

Good advice I'm looking at working up a load that will be legal in colorado as well as here in Washington.

This WA/OR/ID ignition regulation kinda throws a monkey wrench in things. I dont see any reason to have restrictions beyond Colorado's. It will be interesting to see how/if my zero changes when I go back to a 209 and FPB for CO.
I couldn't get shockeys to group for me when I tried it (several years ago). Found blackhorn 209 and would never even consider changing. I use it to push a Barnes ML and its a very lethal combo. Haven't had a deer take even a step yet, and I've shot 7 or 8 with it now. That buck in my avatar took a high shoulder shot from the BH209 and Barnes ML combo. Folded him up.

I use the knight redhots which are made by barns where I can use a sabot and I have been very happy with them too. My deer this year never knew what happened!! I recovered 1 in a deer once and it expanded perfectly.

Colorado regs say "shotgun primer only". Who says a M/L 209 can't be used in shotgun reloading? The only difference in appearance is that the crushable center is black on the M/L primers. I am going to load up a couple of B/P shotgun shells used them and see if there is any difference. Yes FFF does burn a little hotter than FF. I shoot both interchangeably. I shoot about 1000 b/p rounds a month cowboy shooting and really can't tell a lot of performance difference between FF & FFF. Whatever I get cheaper, that's what I shoot. I just bought 2 cases of APP FFF (24#) for $15.00/lb, delivered to me...no shipping or hazmat.

I didnt know CO had a reg on ignition. I have always used shotgun primers other then here where I have to use a musket or #11 cap.
