Ice fishing

This cold weather has me thinking about sitting on the ice for 8 hours staring at a fish finder. Can't wait!!

What's your lake and what do you dream about catching?

I'm still trying for that big mac! Flaming gorge barely freezes where the big ones are and i don't have a boat. Been fishing Boulder lake and it's like the Dead Sea at times. Pretty lake trout there. Love how those mountain lakers look.

Look forward to swapping stories and tactics.

I haven't been out ice fishing since my long time hunting/fishing partner passed away some 8 years ago. I've been thinking about going out this year. I like Boysen and Ocean lakes for walleye.

Well I dream of some day hiking into a mountain lake in Wyoming, staying a week catching some mountain trout.

Other than that it's here in Minnesota catching walleye's. That cold front has the lakes freezing over quiet early this year, should be fishing in a few more days.

You should take a trip east to the Laramie valley lakes... Hattie is very good through the ice.

Here in the land of 10,000 frozen puddles I am in search of the illusive 30+" walleye. Multiple 28"ers and 29"ers but just cant eclipse 30". Most our lakes in this area froze over last night. Going to be a long cold winter at this rate.

Wow, that will be along winter. Most the lakes I hit around the Salt Lake valley won't be ready to fish until the beginning of January, sometimes late December. The Ice fishing supplies are hitting the stores and I can't wait to get out. I mostly fish for trout and perch but I will go after anything.

The strategy I use is simple, drill holes, fish, move if necessary, repeat.

I like to ice fish Lake Granby here. Plenty of lakers that are great eating size! Still in the search for the 30"+ fish. They are definitely there. Hopefully some great pics this winter and then return him to the water!

Good luck. I might have to test the ice this weekend, too. Maybe pick up some black berry belly warmer, too. Keyhole has been fishing pretty good this year it seems like.

I went out yesterday for the first time this year and slayed some pike. Probably caught 30 total and several nice perch, no walleye though. Ice as 10 inches thick already so it should be a good long year of ice fishing.

By far the craziest ice season I have seen here in MN yet. Had walkable ice before Thanksgiving only to be followed by heavy snow and unseasonably warm weather. Finally now getting enough ice in the southern part of the state to drive on. Because of the roller coaster weather the bite as been tough as well. Still searching for that 30" walleye but got some of its close cousins and some decent panfish bites. Hope the late season turns things up!

Elk, have you ever tried the ice-off fish up at Granby? My buddy and I got up there one year and camped; it must have been March or even April as it was RIGHT after ice off and it was cold and wet but we killed the lake trout on big suspended rapalas and spoons. Some of them were pretty nice, in the 20" range at least. Of course that was back before I had a digital camera for proof :(

Man I miss ice fishing.
