Hunting Season Matrix

For me personally and hunters who apply in many western states, it would be very helpful to have a hunting season matrix, by species, by date and by state. For example, if you wanted to know the season dates for elk in all of the states that offer elk hunts it would be great to be able to go to one web site and click on a species and bring up all of the dates that that species could be hunted. This would be a great tool to use when planning your season to see if there is any overlap, and I'm sure there is, between states. Does anyone know if such a matrix exits?

Matrix? It's called doing your homework. To me, doing my own research is just part of the proccess.

I don't call looking up season dates research. Research is analyzing areas and WMU's to choose the best one that will give the best opportunity to harvest a trophy animal. I don't want to waste time with something like hunt dates when I'm dealing with 15 different states. It would be great to have the mundane administrative information like season dates for various species all laid out for you in one place. Now you can use your time to do some meaningful research.

This is what I have come to expect in todays instant gratification society. Everyone wants instant results at the push of a button or a magic pill.
Sometimes you have to put in the work to get results just like with excersise.
The MRS is a great place to start the proccess.

My annual hunt planning tends to start with which hunt I believe we have the best shot at drawing that year, then planning around that tag. This year it was my wife's first quality elk tag, which she recently drew. Now I have a three tiered plan to fit a tag for me into that trip back east.

I also tend to plan applications based on application deadlines, and drawing dates. For instance I know I will know the WY elk results early, then can go to a fall back strategy if we don't draw there.

We have very similar approaches UH. With all the various season dates for a species like Elk, weapon types, states etc, it almost seems like to much info for a matrix approach to be useable, to big? But maybe I am not understanding the concept.

I just choose the tag I think is realistic for the current years draw. Then just as UH posted above, I kind of use tag result dates and app deadlines to help keep time availability reasonable. It would be awful tough to print a chart with every season available in every state every year. Each individual could do a much better job on their own, due to knowing what your interest and goals are. Some states have pretty general season dates, but a lot have dates that are all over the board. Seems like the planning to use different weapons figuring different season dates is part of the fun for me anyway.
I get a calendar and start with my home state and start marking the dates of the tags that I really think I will draw and know I want to hunt. Then I try to work my way down the list of hunts in other states that I have enough points to draw or want to hunt OTC. As I start filling up weeks on the calendar I start adjusting weapon and season choices to fit the openings. If there is a time conflict I start adjusting weapon/season choices or prioritize based on my personal reasons(vacation time, species I want to hunt, cost, quality of hunt etc.) With all the OIL tags I put in for I'm always praying for a time conflict to come up:). Also there are a lot of good OTC and leftover tags to purchase if your planning is off and you end up with a hole in your schedule.

Same plan year after year here.....apply for a elk archery limited tag.....if I don't get that.....then elk OTC archery for my A tag or 1st rifle leftover........B tag leftover cow for a 4th or late season meat hunt.

The son then offsets what I got so we can hunt archery, muzzle, 1st rifle then.....B tag cow.
Most years we set camp Aug 15 and pull it out end of archery or 1st rifle. Im finding out more and more to just stick with that as we got it pretty good here. We will deer hunt off the leftover list and build about 3-4 points and hunt a limited area.

Every few years head up to Wyoming to antelope hunt.

Thanks to Umpqua Hunter, Tim McCoy, gonhunting and Slugz for your thoughtful comments. I appreciate it. If the forum monitor was doing his job the others like Gr8bawana and ivorytip, two smartasses, would have been chastised. What does it take to be a senior member of this forum? I'll answer the question, it takes having no life other than hanging out on this forum waiting for questions that you can jump on to make stupid comments. When you apply in 15 different states having a matrix to compare dates would be a god send. But obviously some people are too stupid to realize that.

excuse me? buck100 I have no idea who you are but nothing about my comment was smart ass. I was dead serious, its a fantastic idea. u come on hear all hot headed and except kind responses???? if you have the money to apply in 15 states then why don't you apply some of that money and find a solution instead of expecting anyone else to do it for you. research is how that info is found. don't expect something for nothing.

Look, what buck100 is actually asking about would truly be helpful and useful. Why would you want to recreate the wheel over and over again. It was a simple suggestion or simple question. As a grad student I used to have to spend wasted time pulling research articles and copying them. Now, the grads simply look online and all that info is readily accessable. I think of the amount of time that they can now spend doing more productive things! MRS is a great start.

Easy now...the Senior Member thing is only based on a post count, as far as I know, not a big deal as far as I am concerned. I think everyone you mentioned qualifies there, and am pretty sure we all have a life outside the EF. There is often some good natured poking that goes on around the forum, yep you got a little of that, but near as I can tell none were personal attacks or mean spirited in nature. Folks that may not agree with an idea you float, are not automatically stupid, they may simply not agree with your view or not know enough to see value in the idea.

While I can understand some frustration from a lack of support around an idea, in my view you are going about it in a less than productive manner.

Buck100. Before I tell someone they're a smartass or stupid I usually like to know that they actually are such. I haven't seen any evidence that Ivorytip or Gr8bawana are either. I think the point you miss is that there is no such thing as a free lunch. Do your research, invest some time, and share that with others if you like, then you would probably get a more receptive response from other members. The vast majority of the forum members seem to be pretty nice guys and gals. Some are a little rough at times, but thats Obama"s fault.

Buck100 You have been a member for just a few days. Be respectful. I don't always get responses that I wish I could get and I sure don't lash out every person or at all.

I can pretty much guarantee every member on the eastmans forum has done just about all of their own research by themselves. If you want help or advice you wont get it the way your acting. Good luck applying in 15 different states. I wish I had the money to do that. And remember to clean up your campsite when you leave (your trash)

buck100, you apply in 15 states!!! that's crazy! that also means you must have some good advice to give. that's what this forum is all about. as far as some of us on this forum, some of us have been on here for several years, yes tempers flair at times but always soothes over like a beer at the bar. may sound cheesy but Eastman's is more than a hunting forum, you wont find another hunting forum anywhere that has members that use it often and has done so for years. we become friends on here, some of us even hunt with each other, and helps a brother out when they r in need. hell I even had another member drop some beer off at my base camp this last fall. he doesn't know me, I don't know him, but we were on the same page... you are more than welcome here and I know I speak for everyone but you got to admit you came on pretty strong man. your idea truly is fantastic and would be a huge time saver for everyone! and my apologies for coming off as sour

Let me tell you something you useless piece of shit, you think you can hide behind the forum monitor. You are a coward. Who the hell are you to tell me "It's called homework." You're not going to lecture me you effen bastard. Then you went on to talk about instant gratification. Who the hell do you think you are? You're obviously too stupid to understand the question, you and that other smart ass that wrote about putting it all together then he would use it. Bunch of ass holes. You're a senior contributor? You obviously have no life if you can spend all that time in the forum jumping on people's questions. Go fuck yourself you SOB. If I ever find out who are you are in big shit trouble. Every forum and blog has an ass hole and you are it for this one. I should have known better than to post a legitimate question. Choke to death you bastard.
