Do you guys call coyotes year round? We usually quit around Feb. and let them get into their mating season. They seem to be pretty thinned out or educated by then anyway. Just curious if there are that many coyotes out in NV, Ca?

I try year round but I hunt different areas. It does get very slow for sure. We have a ton of coyotes in Nv and there is a bunch in Ca as well.

That makes sense. I usually don't travel too far to call coyotes but I guess that's what it takes if you want to hunt later into the year. We are still struggling with mange out here, not sure how long it will take to run it's course but it's been here several years now. I'd say half the coyotes I killed this year had mange (at least 7 I can think of).

That's good about the mange. If you can hit a coyote running at full speed you're doing pretty good. Doesn't get much more challenging than that in my opinion. It's like they know they are harder to hit if they run left/right instead of straight away.

I don't connect on them running very often, but it has happened. I need to do more calling, normally we are driving to a deer/elk/antelope scouting location and come across one or two or three......

Over the years, I've seen some mange on these dogs in southern California, not too bad. It's around, just depending on the area's. I hunt them year round when ever I get a chance, spring is the best time for population control. There is and always will be plenty of those scavenger's around.

When i looked it up, mange is caused by mites and causes hair-loss. Some of the wolves on the Kenai Peninsula have a louse infestation which looks similar.
I prefer to call it pattern baldness; it's why I wear hats.

You are right about the mites, that lead to hair loss. Eventually their skin starts to turn black and they have open sores that bleed. They can get really ugly in the later stages, Im pretty sure once a coyote has it they are eventually going to die from it. They "hole up" in hay stacks or brush piles and don't travel much, they usually grow really long toe nails as a result. They also seem to lose a lot of their fear of human while trying to get warm in the middle of winter with no hair. Earlier this winter I had one come onto my front porch and lay on the door mat. At first he acted pretty sick like he could barely run, until I shot him with the 20 gauge then he came to full life in a hurry and the chase was on. My parents have had them come into their garage trying to eat dog food and stay warm.
