How to start this post?? I finally have a few moments to sit down and make a post from my two week solo Elk bowhunt. As I have mentioned before this is my 20th Season elk hunting in Montana. I have never carried a side arm during all my trips. I have always thought that the extra weight would be to much. I also thought it would be awkward carrying it with a pack on all the time. The hunt I just returned from might have changed my mind. Over the years I have always seen Bears and a few skiddish wolves and never had any encounter that I felt uncomfortable with.

I had been doing some glassing and finally found a few nice bulls to go after. I hunted them hard a few days and found a trail below a large rock slide that they had been using every other day early in the morning . Sort of a pinch point. One morning I decided to go in early and set up in a good spot I had cleared out between two trees to see if they would pass through. As the sun started to come up I heard a very light sound behind me on a rock trail not more than 10ft behind me. I turned to look over my shoulder and there was the culprit a pretty good size Tom MT lion. He was crouched down facing me with his tail wrapped around the front of him!! This dude had totally snuck up on me and I have great hearing. Instinctively I turned and faced him my bow on the ground and tried to scare him of by giving him a generous shout. All he did was to inch a little closer and let out his own displeasure by growling and hissing at me. By this time only a minute or so had passed by and I am thinking Mark Chops for breakfast!!
Now a little flustered and my bow on the ground to far to reach, I un-clipped my sheath knife and opted for a good size rock while keeping my eye on him. With a good grip on the rock I threw the rock hitting him square in the chest. I know I know a rock!!! Anyway at that point he jumped in the air and vanished into the timber.
After all the years I have been doing this I have never really considered Mt Lions as a threat as they are so elusive but this one was so stealthy and snuck right up on me getting so close!! He definitely got my attention and has me thinking about carrying my side arm from now on.

Anyone need a pitcher!!

That is incredible. I always imagine what i would do. I need to add rock throwing to my options.

Holy crap! Too many stories like this this year, keeps reaffirming my fear and the fact that not being able to carry while bow hunting in NV sucks! Bear spray for me next year, you guys have me paranoid now. Glad to hear everything turned out ok.

I know how you feel. Two seasons ago I had the same thing happen while deer hunting here in CA. In my situation the cat took off after I turned and faced him. (No rock throwing needed ;)) For me I just chalked it up to experiance and try to stay a little more aware when I'm out in the woods but I'm not in grizzly and wolf country either. Good luck!

When all you have is a rock.......throw it!! That is pretty close. seems like all these bigger predators keep getting braver all the time.

I'll tell you I probably could have got my bow but I really wanted to keep watching him. I still can't believe he got so close before I heard him. I need to upload the video after it happened so you can get a feel for how close he got. I must have smelled good after the third day!!

I guess I need to start practicing my rock throwing before I go huntiing. Lol. That sounds just like a thread that was on here a couple of weeks ago. I had something make a really weird kind of hiss or growl once in Idaho that I had walked up on and startled. I wAs walking down a dirt pack trail really fast and wasn't making hardly any noise And got within a few yards of it in some brush, I don't know what it was but I backed up and circled out away from it. How did the rest of your hunt go?

The rest of the hunt went great stayed out for 4 days came back in for some food and move the camp. Headed right back in for nine more days. Chased two nice bulls and drew on really nice 6by four times but he never gave me a acceptable shot. Drew on his buddy while he was dogging a cow and couldn't get him to stop. Passed on a few smaller bulls and a few cows. Very good trip but my camp was at 8500ft and the nicer bulls were still another 700-800 feet higher in elevation. I did some serious climbing for almost two weeks but still consider it a pretty successful hunt even though I didn't connect. Cant wait to get back after them.

I carry regardless of the Nv law! For reasons just like this. I never really feel alone in the woods solo.

Thats crazy! 3rd or 4th story I've heard this year about close cat calls. What really scares me is that each cat got away unscaved. Meaning their now smarter... And still hungry.

Broken Arrow, OK
neat story. You never know when your being the hunted. I have seen two while up in a tree and even then it messed with me pretty bad for the next few days.

Old thread reboot! Just look at all the old member, many no longer active on the site. Glad Mark's still with us after the lion stalk.
