Great Wyoming Experience

Hey there, I am new to the forum and just figured I would start out with a little positive info/story. I hunted 82(deer) with a Region W tag as a NR this year which happened to be my first deer hunting trip in Wyoming. Man was it a great experience! I have to say that I come from California(I know I know please don't club me) and although many western states do a great job at managing (some better than others and California is obviously not one) Wyoming is holding their own. All of the information I was able to ascertain from the biologist/wardens/taxidermist etc. was very accurate and helpful. My dad and I ended up seeing close to 90 bucks and had an absolute blast in the 9 days and a good snow storm. I have been reading some posts on this forum and it is always interesting how hunters can have such different experiences yet be hunting the same hills. Obviously genetics, management practices, and a million other variables play into what makes a successful hunting area regardless of the species but I truly feel and based on experience that good old hunting hard/basic hunting tactics are the key to a successful hunt regardless of whether there are 200 bucks in the hills you are hunting or 1. I hope that I can learn from all of you guys on this forum but I also hope I may be able to help those in search of answers be more successful in the field. Headed to Idaho unit 30 for archery elk this year, cant wait already!!

great 1st post just diy. i couldnt agree more. im trying to set up my 1st diy antelope/mule deer hunt in wyo. in one thread i read that the area i am interested in is good, and another thread it is terrible. I guess the best thing to do is trust your research, go hunt, have fun and learn from any mistakes.

I too am from northern California and haven't been harassed, I do wince though when someone asks where I am from when I am hunting out of state though. I haven't been to Wyoming yet but hopefully soon. That area of Idaho you spoke of is really neat, have you been there before?

Hey…I thought Wyoming was a crock. I'm totally confused now. ;)

Just DIY….I agree I absolutely have loved the opportunity to hunt Wyoming. It sounds like you had an excellent trip. Do you think the early heavy snows was a factor last year in the number of deer you saw on your hunt in unit 82?

I can't wait to get back to Wyoming…hopefully this is the year an elk tag is on it's way.

We actually saw the vast majority of the bucks from the 2 days I was hunting the archery season prior to rifle up through the rifle season. The snow came the last couple days of our hunt so the weather really didn't play a factor on that particular hunt which is unusual. Glass, glass and glass, something 95% of the hunters who tell me they don't see deer don't do well or enough of. The bucks we killed were not big but it wasn't because they weren't there or a lack of effort, it was that passing up on 80 bucks until you finally need to go home with some meat instead of tag soup.

4corn as you already know Wyoming has an abundance of antelope! I did a doe antelope hunt 2 years ago out of unit 69 Casper area and we saw some bucks that were well over the 70" mark and pushing in the 80's. Like you said, just do your research and then go put boots on the ground. Never set expectations and I promise you will have a successful hunt. Success to me has many different parts to the equation and it doesn't always have to include a kill.

Welcome to the forum, glad to hear you had a good time on your hunt, you usually get out of it what you put into it,when you are comming from a long way you must do as much research as you can thats part of the hunt.Good luck in Idaho

I love WY, actually been trying to convince my wife to move out there. We spend a few weeks every year, mostly in Yellowstone, but I do hunt a bit too!

I dont think you could have a bad time out there, too much to see and do.

If you figure out how to convince your wife let me know your secret. I'll pay good money to know.

I am hoping for a good experience in WY this fall and reading posts like this gives me some confidence in that. I have to say everyone I spoke to out there has been very friendly and helpful. I just don't know how the folks in WY will take to a hunter from the greatest state in the union NY.. Its hard to relay sarcasm on computer so yes that was very sarcastic!! FWI not from NYC, more sarcasm.

The people of WY have no problem with NR hunters. I've been there several years in a row and will continue till I can't hunt. Down to earth guys that work for a living and understand there is enough opportunity for everybody. As many Elk as Oregon and a population less than Portland.
