Since we are on the subject now, about when did hand held gps's become available to the general public?
Haha, well better yet I was borrowing it from my great uncle. It wasn't my GPS. My uncle was more technological advanced than me! He gave it to me plenty early before the trip to learn how to use it but I don't remember the brand or anything. It had a flip up antenna though. And like I said when I pulled it out to use it, the only thing that showed on the screen was "No Signal." This was about 15 years ago...You just made me feel really old when you said that you had a GPS when you were 15...

I just got the same GPS in the mail today. I'm glad I waited. They even dropped an extra $40 dollars off the already reduced price. I don't really need the pre-loaded maps but for that price I couldn't pass it up. It should be a great GPS. This thread helped me out alot.
