I bought my first handheld in 2000. Had a GPS on my boat in the early 90's, but early on the military restricted their accuracy to something like +/- 100' (I think they used to call it Differential)because the GPS's were using the military network. There used to be a SatNav system in place for boaters in the early 80's. Sats would pass over every 4 hours and you could get a fix for your location. Pretty crude when compared what we have today.

My first must have been around 2001 or 2002. A garmin rhino 110. I still have it and it works fine, only reason I got the 450t was so I could use the chips in it.

You just made me feel really old when you said that you had a GPS when you were 15...
Haha, well better yet I was borrowing it from my great uncle. It wasn't my GPS. My uncle was more technological advanced than me! He gave it to me plenty early before the trip to learn how to use it but I don't remember the brand or anything. It had a flip up antenna though. And like I said when I pulled it out to use it, the only thing that showed on the screen was "No Signal." This was about 15 years ago...

I just got the same GPS in the mail today. I'm glad I waited. They even dropped an extra $40 dollars off the already reduced price. I don't really need the pre-loaded maps but for that price I couldn't pass it up. It should be a great GPS. This thread helped me out alot. Thnaks

I also use the garmin 450 and love it. It does eat battery s but if you use the new lithium battery's you will get at least 3 times the life out of it.
