I see this on other forums and it looks fun. Would anyone be up for putting together a few teams, creating a scoring system and having a little fun?
I would think it would have to be a balance of quality and quantity since some people can shoot like 5 bucks or 5 does. Maybe some base points for each animal and then certain points for the best animal? Probably want to stay away from BC scoring since that is controversial enough :)
Just a thought to have fun this coming season.

I don't compete ,I complete.

I have nothing against your competition . it just stands to reason that someone with ten tags is gonna kill more deer then someone with only one tag.

I participate in a deer contest on a local hunting forum. It's all honor system based, and there are no prizes. For the majority of participants, it's just for fun and don't really care if the team wins or loses.

There have been a couple issues though.

Five new guys created accounts and a team, and literally their only posts would be their deer check in. Wouldn't even answer quoted questions or acknowledge congrats. They would each shoot 5 or 6 deer, and won every time. They never participated in the discussion, and soon it got out that they entered every type of contest they could find. It was just some weird ego boost thing.

Another issue was the people that just whine about everything. Even the smallest, most seemingly insignificant rule would be complained about by somebody.

But overall, it seems to be a positive thing on that forum and keeps people engaged. I look forward to seeing the check ins every year, often by users who may not post their kills otherwise.

that's my problem with hunting competitions. all in good fun is cool . making it about ego is contrary to the reason I hunt.

I find getting out in the woods to be both thrilling and humbling. sure I take pride in my abilities but I also get to know my shortcomings.

if it ever becomes all about the bone for me , I will quit hunting for good.

I'd have to pass also.
My contest every year is between the animal, and me. Sometimes it wins, sometimes I win, sometimes we both win.

As I have gotten older I have found that hunting isn't about killing but the enjoyment of the hunt. How do you score that?

I'll go for years without killing a deer, but also in those years I pass up a lot of bucks that others will send a bullet at.
Jim...you are totally correct. If you want to compete against other people.....there are plenty of shooting sports out there. I compete in several of them.

I'd have to pass too. I'm not at a "trophy taking" point (if there is such a thing) in my hunting career. I take the first good eater I find, and there's no contest for "best tasting animal brought home"!

I agree. There are a lot of humble folks on here. I deleted my membership to another site a week ago because I was sick of seeing all of the drama. It was like the yahoo news of the hunting world...lol

i say do it and let the people that want to do it, do it. and the people that don't, don't have to.
not all of us and old and tired and non competitive any more. LOL it is a joke old timers.
I understand hunting is just not killing, but i have discovered succesful hunting can also be about motivation.
Maybe this will motivate people to go over the next ridge, stay out later, get up earlier. there is nothing wrong with competition or motivation.

I don't think it's a good idea. I know a lot of those whitetail programs are doing it but that doesn't make it right in my book. Kind of like Pete Rose betting on baseball... LOL.

I usually hunt with 4 or 5 other guys and we started out, years ago, putting $5 in a pot and the guy with the biggest buck would take the money at the end of the hunt. Then it went up to $20 . I don't think the money affected which bucks were killed. Just whoever was lucky enough to tag the biggest buck. The last night in camp we would score all the bucks and celebrate the hunt with adult beverages. It just got to be a tradition. Fun times.

Alright well let me see if I can come up with something super low-key and fun. I will make sure it is offensive to no one and it might be an opportunity to meet some new people and connect with other folks on another level. What prizes. Just good times. Forum member deadline was yesterday :) that’s the only rule so far :)
