Draw Rant

Why in the Sam Hill does it take weeks or even months for all these states to perform their draws? Once the app period is over they ought to be able to have it done and posted by the next week! 🤬🤬🤬

Most of the states need to do a survey to see just how many animals survived the winter. Hence the long wait.

Once the surveys are done and the figures are out the draw usually happens withing a week or so of that.

Perhaps the states could make the application period be in March but then some states will want to have theirs in January to entice hunters to put in for their draw first and then realize that they might draw in that state and not put in for others.

As far as Nevada goes your spot on JimP out doing surveys as we speak, They need to get counts of animals that survived the hunt and winter then they set the quotas.

I have thought the same thing. In Oregon our app period ends May 15th. I am pretty sure by the middle of May, they have a pretty good idea on herd numbers following the winter. They give people until June 1 to make a change. I don't understand this either. A person has had from Jan 1 to May 15th to enter their choices, why do they need another 2 weeks to make sure they are correct? Then they wait a couple more weeks to do the draw. With the technology available, you should be able to press a button and have the draw completed in about 30 minutes to an hour. Then do a random check to make sure things went right and you're done.

The wait is even longer for me because all my apps are in by mid-march (I do the same every year). I have to wait 3 1/2 months for results!

Seems to me that states are competing to get people's money committed to their drawing early then waiting until they have population counts to actually set tag numbers and hold the drawing. My home state of Utah is the worst about this.

Probably some truth to it.

JimP is right on they are completing herd surveys. You can't really do that until the threat of winter kill is pretty much over.

Fish and Game departments are doing the steps to conduct a draw in "parallel" rather than in "series". If they did the steps in series (one step, then the next) the draw might not be until July, then people wouldn't have enough time to plan for their hunts. Herd surveys need done, those numbers viewed, tag numbers have to be established, tag numbers need to be entered into the system and double and triple and maybe even quadruple checked.

I've herd of draws being conducted and there were gross errors in the tag numbers entered into the draw system, then Fish and Game is then trying to rectify the situation and take tags away from people who drew. That nearly happened to me on a mountain goat tag in Colorado. The tag was issued, then they were saying the herd survey didn't allow for that many tags to be issued. They asked me to hunt the following year, but I was moving out of the country. I got to go on my hunt.

The older I get, the easier the wait is. :)

One thing nice about the June 1 edit period is several state draws come out in May. Having until June 1 can be nice. I doubt that the June 1 edit date is moving the draw back any further, but rather a convenience we have. Most Game and Fish departments lock up any editing for a few weeks before the draw.

I think for Nv this year they plan on doing the draw very soon if they haven’t already and then they plan on doing a few practice draws to test the system to make sure everything is working correctly. I think they will use this time at least this year to try and make the draw and results go as smooth as possible.
