I've got 20 elk points been trying to get the one muzzleloader tag in unit 10. But I'm hearing that maybe thats not the best choice. Has 10 gone down hill.

Do not know much on the state of the herd around there, however my suggestion is to talk to some biologists and see what their thoughts are. Other good options are 1,2,201 but I would check with biologists in those areas to determine where the best choice for you lies.

My understanding is Unit 10 has been declining. Unit 2 and 201 are probably the top two units in Colorado, but with 20 points it will likely take a few more years to get the tag with the point creep each year. For guys tired of chasing a tag in units 2, 201 and 10, the main unit seems to be unit 61. I understand there are a ton of elk on this unit (10,000 I have been told). On average the bulls are a bit smaller on 61, typically in the 300-330 class with very good hunter success. There are about 6 non-resident muzzleloader tags in Unit 61 and it takes about 18 points to draw and runs 60% to 75% success. The first rifle hunt on Unit 61 takes about 16 points to draw and there are about 20 non resident tags, and the success runs about 70%. You would likely draw either the first rifle or muzzleloader tag with your number of points.
With 20 points, even unit 10 seems to be years in the future for a NR. Yes, 201 and 2 are other good units, but 20 points doesn't get you even close to in the game here for many years. The reality is that these three units are out of reach for at least 5-10 years, maybe longer.
61 is good, but just a few years ago could easily be drawn with 10-12 points. Those with 20 points could have easily drawn this unit for many years. It is one of the few remaining options for people with 20 or less points, and provides a quality hunt for up to 350 bulls.
