Colorado Mule Deer Hunt

I have been busy since deer my black powder season ended so I am late posting some pics. I had a great hunt and saw over 50 bucks in 9 days and hunted miles of country. I ended up missing a buck I have been hunting for a few years. He was 100 yards away and I somehow blew it. This was a heartbreaking experience because I have been trying to kill a Booner buck for years and I blew the chance but such is life. I know it will be that much sweeter when I do accomplish my goal. My brother and myself saw some huge bucks and beautiful country. Enjoy the pics.

Thats a great buck! Wish you had got him. I missed a fairly easy shot on a big buck in UT with my ML 1 year too. It still haunts me but thats the way it goes sometimes.

Congratulations on a good hunt. I also had a grand old time during the MZ season, but found more moo cows than bucks. That one in the pic is a beauty; are those drop tines, or just some odd shadows?

The photos are crummy because I don't have the right equipment to take them thru a spotter and my spotter is average. I am going to upgrade to a new Vortex spotter and the right camera/adapter going forward. That is actually velvet ganging off of the base of his antlers.

I forgot to add the other part of the story. After I missed him I watched him and his buddies head over a saddle so I booked it to the saddle and watched them bed. My brother and I stalked in on them again and I let my brother try for him this time. My brother stalked to within 54 yards of him and shot at him. I watched him skin the hair right off of his back and shoulder. There was a perfect white line where he grazed him. I was watching all of this thru a spotter at 400 yards away. The chances of getting a crack at a buck like that 2 times in one day is rare. When we got back to camp we both shot our guns to make sure they were on. I was dead on and know I flat out missed. My brothers gun was 10 inches high. We are not sure what happened with his but at some point his sights were knocked off during the hunt. I have been watching this buck for a few years and blew a stalk on him last year so we have a little bit of history. I hope he makes it thru the winter and I see him next September.

Still a great buck. With the MZ, just because you can see them doesn't mean you can shoot them. I did manage to connect with what might be my greatest (or luckiest) shot ever with the MZ, but that too is part of the adventure. I sent you a PM.

Yeah I hung up a picture of him in my basement where I store all of my gear. Just another thing to motivate me to train harder and prepare for next season!

The older I get and the longer I hunt, then more I appreciate those misses. The excitement that exists knowing he is still out there is sometimes a great reward if we allow it. The daydreams over the next year will be fun for you...
