Thought I was a shoe-in...I was wrong!
Guess I'll be scouting moose in WY unless I get REAL lucky in the Utah draw.

No elk tag this year. I'll just buy a OTC archery either sex tag. Good luck to all of the guys that drew.

I know thats in the BlackHills and alot of those elk are generally located in the same spots year to year. What i'm saying is the elk you find in June or now for that matter probably won't be in the same spot come Sept. archery season. They are having their calves in lower green meadows and timber, and when the cow thinks the calves are big and strong enough they will take them to higher country, sometime alot of miles away. Another thing is nothing has any substantial horn growth yet to determine size. I scouted the whole month of August one year before the archery opener in Sept. We seen some giant bulls feeding early before the sun came out, on a few different occasions. Come Sept. We never seen any of those bulls anywhere close to where we seen them in August. They get female on the mind and they will go where the cows are. Just a few examples i have seen in Wyoming.

Not to sound negative, but what exactly are you scouting out in June?
I'll be scouting all summer in the unit I drew for elk here in Colorado. It's a new unit to me, close to home (100 mils +/-) and fairly small. I have never spent any time there. I'll be looking for camping areas, water sources, roads, etc. I know that there probably will not be many elk there during the summer, but it is prime winter habitat and I'll be there hunting during 4th season in late November and the elk will be there then. Sure don't want to go there "blind" for the hunt.

End of June, start of July. Im going to scout and learn the unit and my son lives north of Denver, I got roundtrip airfare real cheap. So Im going to go learn some of the unit, do some fishing, and enjoy the mountains. I have plenty of vacation time and the wife says use it for hunting :)

I dont expect the elk to be in the same place when i get there in Sept

That is a good plan Don. I honestly wasn't trying to be negative. I just know from my experiences that the elk weren't in the same spot from June til i could hunt them in Sept. I have similar plans for late July here in Wyoming. I drew a bull moose tag and want to scout some and i figured by the end of July the bulls will have alot of horn growth and i should be able to tell if they will be big or small bulls by the Sept. archery hunt. Sounds like you have a good wife that lets you use vacation to hunt. Thats a bonus. Anyways, hope you find a good one and enjoy yourself and family while your out there. Sorry if my question came out wrong.
