Hey all:

I am in the process of fleshing and salting another grizzly bear hide and I am wondering if anyone has any good tricks for getting the smell of rancid fat and bear out of your clothing. I have fleshed and salted many hides over the years and I have yet to find a good method to get the smell out of clothing.

If anyone has a good method for getting bear smell out I would appreciate it.

Agree with MT backcountry hunter. Nothing works. Just keep a set of frog togs rain gear, bibs and/ or a jacket on and then throw them away when you are done!
Nothing like the wet dog but worse smell of bear!!

If they are anything like mink, the only thing you can do is hope the smell wheres off of you and throw away your clothes. Good Luck!

Try soaking them in water and baking soda for a few days.

Then wash in baking soda.

Take out of wash and dip into dry baking soda. Hang dry then rinse

Soaked it in bleach and baking soda for a couple days, washed in bleach, soaked again for a day in baking soda water, then wash. Now they are not too bad at all. Took almost a week but they came out good. I used some of the reagent grade bleach in my lab at work to clean my thermacell case. Got that smell out in seconds. If only I could use it on cloths.

Try some non-pathogenic enzyme product. Plumbers use for grease traps, Vets might have for cleaning up various animal smells.
Knew a pig farmer who pre-soaked his clothes before washing. Washing will kill the enzymes.
