Back up plan, over the counter tags

I'm sure there are plenty of hunters that go through this every year. You didn't draw the tag or tags you applied for but you would like to go hunting right? I live in NY so I would like a back up plan for a western hunt for elk, deer, antelope or anything else that you can have a chance at a decent animal. I'm not picky about species. I prefer rifle or black powder, guided is a plus as I don't have time to drive 1,500 miles to scout.
Any ideas??

I think you can buy landowner tags in Colorado for deer. You could apply in the special drawing for Wyoming Elk and put down Gen as a second choice. I'm sure there is a ton more.

There is over the counter bull tags for colorado and idaho colorado otc tags are for archery 2nd rifle and 3rd rifle with lots of outfitters. I would look up Bull Basin Outfitters for deer and elk in colorado.

You can buy landowner tags in New Mexico as well

Idaho and Montana, correct me if I'm wrong but MT had a ton of combo tags leftover last year. And we all know ID's situation they couldn't give away there general tags if they wanted to. Lots of good country but it can be a lot of work to find something lots of outfitters in both states. Especially in the wilderness areas.

Private land hunts in Eastern MT if your looking for guided hunts would be the top if my list if I was coming from back east. There are some elk hunts in CO that would be wilderness type stuff and I'm sure there are plenty of outfitters to choose from.

If you have the coin and are looking for a big mule deer look for a landowner tag/outfitter in eastern Colorado. That part of the state is putting out giant mule deer and good whitetails.

Funny you say that. The hunt we are going to apply for is a NM elk hunt. Land owner tags are available but are $4,500 additional. It is an option if you can handle the price. You only live once I guess....

You pay for the tag at regular price to the state. The 4,500 or sometimes more is what the landowner charges!

That money goes to the landowner. The landowner tags are way above and beyond what I would pay as a non-resident in the draw. If you get a landowner tag, you are also supposed to only hunt on that persons property, but I know a lot of people own property that landlocks BLM land so no one else can hunt it. They, in turn, don't let anyone through to hunt it and hunt it like it is their private property. You definitely have to pay to play on private...

I'm assuming that 4500 is also for the guide fee? If not, they had better have some monster animals if you have to pay a guide fee on top of that. You are talking close to 10k for something like that

There are unit-wide Vouchers. It would take a special kind of property for me to buy a PLO tag.

tdcour, That $4,500 was in addition to the guide fee in N.M. That is why I am looking for a back up plan that can be implemented after the April draw if unsuccessful. I don't mind paying for quality hunts but you have to draw the line somewhere. 10k plus incidentals is too much for me to hunt elk with a landowner tag. I only wish I had started saving points earlier on in life. So many options, so little time... Thank you all for your help!
