Archery ELK, pre, rut, post??

So of course you hear and see more elk during the peak of the Rut, but does that actually lead to success/killing?

ex. do you think sitting water pre-rut in New Mexico you could be successful vs calling/hunting during the rut peak?

also what about just pre rut and hunting vs sitting water etc...? also I wonder about competition on some of those water holes etc...

I'm also not talking about shooting the absolute biggest elk in a unit, vs just a nice trophy say.

only issue I have with going early is the heat. I just don't particularly enjoy hunting when the highs are over 70 or so . other hunters will be an issue whenever you go.

do you have a plan to get it off the mtn before the meat spoils???
