Archery and/or Rifle...

Feel free to post or PM me...

Looking for a quality guide/outfitter in a WY general elk unit.

private land would be nice, but open to public.

Would love to be able to hunt say 5 days with a bow then switch over to the rifle if needed.

almost leaning towards a quality rifle hunt though, really seeking to harvest a bull.

Do you have any points? This year, it required <2 for a regular elk tag. I think that 1 will do it if you are willing to cough up the extra $ for a special tag. I know of a great outfitter who has camps in the general area, but he is usually booked two years in advance. He no longer has to advertise or travel to sport shows...that should tell you something. I plan to book with him again in 2017. If you still want more info, let me know and I will send a PM.

I have 1 less than max elk points, but want to go on a 2nd choice elk hunt.

so yes I would be willing to pay the extra $$ for the general.

I would agree with Umpqua Hunter about unit 7 and Wagonhound. What other unit are waiting for that would be any better than 7 if you want a great hunt with being able to kill a great bull. They have allot of land and elk both.

I'm thinking the same thing guys! What he's talking about doing with an outfitter in a general area seems to be a waste of money when he could do what you mentioned.

So for wyoming a guy can put in for a limited draw and wouldn't expect to draw and then put in for 2nd choice with special draw and can still be able to draw a general tag?

Yea, if you look in the WY draw thread from earlier in the year and Wapitibob does a great job explaining it.

Yep! In a nutshell the Wyoming statute requires that 7250 elk licenses be issued to NRs. Every year so far there have been enough tags left after the initial draws to give all Special Draw applicants a General tag if they had it as their second choice when they didn't draw their first choice. Some have even been given to those who had it as a third choice if there were still tags left after the second choice applicants were satisfied. The people who get these tags that way are not listed in the draw odds stats the G&F posts on their website, so every year people don't realize what's going on.

I'd take 16 over 7. The Q Ranch pulls huge bulls every year for a lot less money that the Wagonhound. Plus there's a lot better access in 16 for anyone doing it DIY. However the OP inquired about general season area's. If I was going that route, I'd look at one or two of the outfitters who have access to Elk Mountain or the surrounding area in the Snowy's...

I wouldnt hire wagonhound or a guide on max points if your a capable hunter go on a wilderness guided hunt this yr on the second draw then save your points and go next year in a trophy area on your own.
