Here is a picture of my only color phase black bear. Not huge...but I like the deep chocolate color which is why I pulled the trigger.

Here's a couple of my favorite color phase. Ones a spring bear and ones from fall. ODFW did a cross section and counted annuli on the fall boar and it came back at 15 years old. I have a couple more that are lighter colored, but they aren't in digital format yet :) (Kind of dating myself)

I’ve only taken one bear. It was black and shot out of a tree with a pack of hounds at the bottom of it back in 1991. Haven’t Bear hunted since. I’m sure glad there are guys out there that like to hunt them without hounds, I’m just not one of them. Nice bears guys.

Where I hunt in SE Wyoming, I'd say they are about 50:50...half color phase and half black. Here is a picture of a black one I shot in 2016.

Pretty much all black in the area that I hunt. Out of thirteen bears, I only shot one color phase bear, a medium size blonde. I shot this bear in the Trinity Mountains in Northern California. At that time it was the #11 Inland Black Bear taken with a handgun.

The only bear I've ever shot. B&C-class boar. When I dropped it off at the taxidermist, I said, "We saw a bigger one too."

He said, "No you didn't. Trust me."

The IDFG biologist in Jerome said it was the biggest bear he'd ever tagged. It was my first bear hunt and I got lucky. Didn't even know what I had
