Elk are wanderers and understanding travel routes inside any area and matching it with where elk will be when is the biggest learning curve to hunting them. Once that curve is gone elk start dieing regularly.
I am a history junky, in particular the Roman Republic/Empire and WW2, some of the documentaries available now are fantastic.

People also like to chase the hot spots that are close to established trails. Finding spots far from the established trails helps, for elk that pretty much means finding patches of black timber with access to night time and morning feeds.
