    winter project completed

Thank you. I do consider myself to be a fairly good carpenter, but never was much of an artist. I trap shoot with a guy who can carve animals out of wood that you swear are real. My grand-daughter can make a pencil portrait from a color photo that you swear is a black & white photo. Those...

    winter project completed

Yes it was. I had snowmobiled into the lake several years ago and in my mind it is more beautiful than Yosemite, especially without all the crowds. I could easily spend the entire summer at various "disbursed camping" spots throughout the west. During that covid year, a lot of other folks...

    winter project completed

I found a couple pics from the Wyoming trip, but had to change the aspect ratio because it was too large to post here. I'll give it a try.

    winter project completed

I did not keep track of the hours spent on the kayak, and did that because I didn't really want to know. A lot of the time, I could only work for an hour, then had to wait a day or two for the epoxy or varnish to set up for another coat. I also had to make a "practice" build of the bow and...

Tim, that is callled a bifrucated bow. (SP??), In calm seas, the bow is out of the water, but in wind/waves, the lead bow splits the wave and the second bow guides the water to lift the bow. I don't know if I am explaining it correctly, but if you see a modern ship in drydock, they also have...

    winter project completed

After a couple long, tough winters, and enduring the covid shutdown. I finally completed my cedar strip kayak. I bought the plans from "Laughing Loon", and fabricated the whole thing starting with live cedar trees on my property. I have extensive canoeing experience, but very limited kayak...

    Who else is...

I have slowly been able to work my way back to my spring goal of 20 pullups and 40 pushups to start my day. Each year it takes me longer to get there, but at least I still can. The pullups was the # needed for a max score as part of the Marine Corps PFT. The other part were 80 sit-ups in 2...

Giving up on Alaska - anyone been to Costa Rica?

The caribou hunting was really crappy in Costa Rica even before the ban. You could book a hunt that was really cheap, but the success rate was dismal.

Should I apply for Antelope in Wyoming or not???

I've shot 7 does in WY, and only one buck when I had the tag. I saw a steady decrease in the antelope numbers since 2015, when the zone that I hunted looked like the Seringetti. I was able to build on my knowledge of the area while gaining points to draw a buck tag again, but now that I have...

Should I apply for Antelope in Wyoming or not???

Looking at the hunting reg. book, you will find that the antelope tags that are generally referred to as "buck" tags actually state, "any antelope". I don't know how many does are killed when someone can't find a buck, but I don't think that should even be an option when the population is so low.

    Dolores County Colorado Hunting Accident

As long as we are getting one group upset (MZ hunters), why not tic off a different group ( archery hunters). Whatever is done, even nothing, the man was guilty of a careless act, one that was preventable by following the basic rule of always being sure of your target.

    Colorado winter kill.

I just spoke to my bud who told me that just about every four legged wild critter is dying or already dead where he lives (Raymond Mts., south of Afton, WY. His son found 5 dead antelope yesterday, the local deer are in as bad shape, and even mature bull elk have been found dead. The elk are...

    Elk Muzzleloader

I had also changed my front sight to a "Globe" sight. There were various inserts that you could change out. I had shot the mule deer at 204 yds., and the factory fiber optic front sight totally blocked out the deer at that distance....but it did the job. On a later deer hunt in CO, I found...

    Big Bear & Scoring Skulls?

That old boy wouldn't have had any problem surviving the winter....at least until he ran into you!

    Fishing the Big Horns

Dan; Maybe I was just lucky with the first one that I tried, and it's possible that other colors and sizes would work also. I think that a big part was that I was able to access the whole lake, and caught all of my grayling a good ways from shore. That one spinner put 27 grayling in the boat...

Another article on Wyoming's tough winter

If you have a feeder in your back yard all year, and have a variety of feed options then deer seem to be able to adapt to it. There are certainly other reasons for not doing so (CWD, vehicle collisions, etc.) Just throwing out some corn or hay in the middle of winter might make you feel good...

    Who else is...

We had a great turnout of league teens, so that I ended up having to do very little shoveling. The coaches brought a variety of shovels, since most of the kid's shovels were plastic and wouldn't cut the hard snow banks. It's hard to find a good steel snow shovel these days, but we had some...

    Fishing the Big Horns

I was in several WY lakes last fall, and caught cut-throat in the Wind Rivers, rainbows and Kokanee salmon in rivers, brookies and a brown in Soda Lake, and I finally tried for Grayling in Willow Lake. The water was very low, and mucky on the receded shoreline, and those fishing from shore had...

    Elk Muzzleloader

I forgot to post that I used 110 gr. of #209 powder. I also use sabot bullets for deer in Minnesota, and would continue to do so if we still had any deer left in the NE part of the state. I found that I could shoot more accurately at longer distances with them, but that's not an option in CO...

    Elk Muzzleloader

Having the advantage of my own rifle range (200yds.) allowed me to spend the time to find what works best for my 50 cal. TC Omega. Most inlines are rated for a max of 150 grains of powder, but that should never be your starting point. I started at 100 gr. of Shockey Gold, and over several...
