The 2019 Mule Deer Success Thread!

I didn't even think of getting a side view of his antlers or of one holing his head up once I got back to camp. We did have a few other hunters spot the antlers from the road 50 yards away and come into our camp to check him out. I'm going through the town where the antlers are at now waiting...

    2019 OTC 2nd rifle elk

Any elk hunt where you go in blind not knowing what to expect is going to be a tough one. Even after you get to know a area and what the elk are doing it can get real tough finding them. Bears are the same way. Most of the bear tags sold OTC for the season during your elk and deer hunts are...

    Jack O'Conner/Outdoor Life magazine

There are a lot of writers that are now gone that the writers of today couldn't even change their typewriter ribbons for them. I had a subscription to Sports Afield until they were bought out by the bicycle folks and changed the format and I didn't go back when it was sold again and changed...

    Jack O'Conner/Outdoor Life magazine

Magazines back then were read cover to cover and then passed along to someone who couldn't afford them. Even now most of my outdoor magazines have been sent overseas to our troops who love them. Sadly the person that I was sending them to passed away a couple of weeks ago so now I need to find...

    Leaving In The AM

Only problem with those birds is that we would only have 3-4 days to hunt them and by the time we get there they hold tighter than a pair of tighty whities. We have tried it a couple of times with no success, and when your primary target is those stink pigs it makes it tough to pack a shotgun.

This really isn't a joke but should be a option on any hunting catalog website.

    Jack O'Conner/Outdoor Life magazine

The only thing that I had against O'Connor was that he was a .270 man at the time I was a 30-06 person. But you have to give him credit, he was one heck of a shot and a hunter and his stories will entrance you. I remember reading them all back in the 60's and would never pass up the...

    Leaving In The AM

I have learned that when doing adventures or helping him out that I just need to go a lot slower. Even shopping he has earned the designated shopping cart pusher. The one hunt that he excels in is water fowl. He'll walk out to his hunting area and just sit on a bucket and drop birds all day...

    Here Kitty Kitty....

This could be a time for the mount to be curled up so that you can place him at the foot of your easy chair when watching TV. I saw a picture of a mount like that but I am not sure if it was on this forum or another one.

    Leaving In The AM

Well, we are home from the hills. My brother in law was starting to get disappointed in the bucks that we were seeing and decided that last night would be our last out in the wilds. We just were not seeing the kind of bucks that we should of, I tried to convince him that the migration for...

Seeing a lot of small bucks but no shooters B I L is starting to get discouraged. We know where the big ones are but a 79 year old just can't get there and back anymore, it's the pits to get old

    Rethinking my loads/calibers for deer.

For the best wind bucking bullets you need to find a long time skinny one. That is where the 6.5's shine. Those long skinny 140-145 grain bullets buck the wind real good. How about a 6.5-300 Weatherby for a new rifle?

Not many deer on scouting trip

Also the OP is hunting mule deer and not a deer that is going to roar, grunt, come into scrapes, or really be patterned very well. While mule deer will hang out in a area if they get bumped they will be out of the country not to come back until the following year.

Recommendations For Rifle Scope Lens / Anti Fog Cleaner

I just use disposable lens cleaners that come in a foil pack. I have also used those lens pencils that have a brush and a cleaning solution in them but I find that they dry up every year and need to be replaced

    Hornady Precision Hunter

A number of elk, a couple of mule deer, and 7 plains game animals in Africa. The ranges were from 90 yards out to 479 on my kudu. All have been complete pass troughs and one shot kills except for my gemsbok which I screwed up. My rifle shoots them sub moa out to 400 yards, that is as far...

    Leaving In The AM

It's surprising how good a nice long hot shower along with your own bed feels. Two more days of comfort and then we are off to unit 21 for a deer hunt. I may pick up a elk tag as a just in case scenario
