    Stepping my game up

I stopped trying to beat the wind. I have more encounters now than I did when I tried to keep the wind in my favor. Where I hunt it’s nearly impossible after 9:00 am to keep the wind right, constantly swirling Another thing I’ve learned is mid day seems to be when I have had several of my close...

32 Hour Blacktail Hunt (What Would You Do?)

My tactics change with time of season and weather. I use most every trick in the book. My least successful tactic is glassing, the most successful is still hunting timber.

    Oregon national Forest elk

I would be looking for elk tracks in the snow. I used to hunt for cow elk back when it was a secondary archery hunt if you didn’t kill a bull in September. I hunted Marion forks area and usually found elk pretty close to the Hwy.(none of that burned last summer) I haven’t hunted there since...

    Oregon national Forest elk

Cow tag is for cow only, you cannot shoot a bull of any size.

    Stepping my game up

I’m not a 10% er on elk, that being said the killing part with a bow is where I fail. I hunt an area here in Oregon that has about a 6% success rate. I can typically find a bull within one day, getting an arrow into one is an entirely different story. The best thing I ever did is took a class on...

    Elk Rifle

That should be just fine, My 25-06 loved the 100gr Remington Core-lokt. I spent years trying to out do them with handloads and never did. the closest I ever came was 100 gr nosler BT They didn’t perform all the at well when it came time to kill. They worked but I had to shoot the deer two...

I let the rifle tell me what weight to use. You put it in the right spot, the animals die. I’ve killed animals with bullets most people would not consider a good “hunting” bullet. If they group well I use them without hesitation.

    Elk Rifle

I love the 300WM! Recoil on my rifle is not good but I’m not a pussy either. I just put it tight to my shoulder and take it. I can shoot it as good as my 25-06 and I never feel recoil when I’m shooting and an animal. I’m 100% kill with it and have never had to track anything. I’ve used a wide...

    Favorite Hunts

Archery elk hunting for me. Here in Oregon it is the only thing besides Blacktail deer I can consistently hunt annually and feel I have a very good chance at success. I’m horrible at sitting in one spot for very long so glassing or sitting on a stand isn’t my cup of tea. I like to move and make...

I had that feeling about deer. I’ve been looking any Wyoming stats pretty deep this last few weeks. I’m trying to narrow my selection for antelope.

This is the kind of honest feedback I’m looking for guys. I’m not surprised by the responses so far, I have done some homework on my own. I was there on an archery elk hunt seven years ago and saw a few deer but wasn’t really looking for deer. I thought it was neat country and at the time I...
