    Cartridge extraction

It’s my understanding that you do not want lubricated ( slick) brass! It doesn’t “grip” the chamber walls properly, and add additional ( and unwanted) “thrust” to the bolt! Someone correct me if I’m incorrect! memtb

    Cartridge extraction

Different bullets from different manufacturers have different shapes (ogive). The previous suggestion was to color the bullet (say with a magic marker), chamber the bullet, then remove and check for rifling marks on the bullet. Though, the different manufacturered bullets may have the “same”...

    Cartridge extraction

Assuming that the brass is properly spec’d, rim diameter, case length, etc. Without being there to observe, I’m gonna suggest that the Winchester ammo is producing higher pressures. Heavy bolt lift is a sign of high pressures! memtb

What is your go to elk rifle / ammunition combo?

My wife and I, each have “only” 1 hunting rifle for all of our big game hunting! Hers: Win. Model 70 (New Haven) SS, “Tupperware” stock, in .338 WM, 225 TTSX’s@ 2950 FPS. Mine : semi-custom Win. Model 70, .375 AI, 250 TTSX’s @ 3130 FPS. Both rifles wearing Leupold 3.5-10 CDS scopes , in...

    What's your personal challenge?

For myself, most of my bucket list will not be fulfilled, most are a younger mans sport! Hunt Alaska, Africa, take very good representative specimens of most NA big game, and several more big game animals with my handgun, run the Baja 1000 on a motorcycle, race competitively in motocross, get in...

300 PRC, 375 Ruger, wouldn't they be better if...?

It would’ve offered a bit more performance, but their big “sales pitch” was.....the standard (30-06 ) length action. I’ve never observed that extra 1/4” or so length being a big handicap. Maybe, if you had T-Rex arms! :ROFLMAO: memtb

What Pistols Do You All Carry?

My wife’s favorite “carry” handgun! It also has a 22 rim fire conversion, which can make shooting less expensive. Though, our conversion is pretty particular about what you feed it! memtb

    Black Guns...or MSRs...

We own an AR , thanks to my wife winning one at an NRA Banquet. Otherwise, we probably would not own one. That said, it is enjoyable to shoot, and is surprisingly accurate. 5 shot groups at 100 yards, easily go under an inch using my hand loads developed for another rifle. I’ve never built a...

    338 Win barrel length

I too, like shorter barrels, for the same reason as yourself. However, if you wish to keep a longer barrel, but wish to maintain portability....this is what I did with my rifle. Relocate the forward sling swivel to the barrel. This effectively and substantially lowers the muzzle when the rifle...

    338 Win barrel length

The .338 WM is not really considered an “over bore” cartridge. Meaning, that from the generally accepted barrel length of 24” your gains or loses in velocities / per inch of barrel length should not be significant! It seems that 15 FPS to 30 FPS change in velocity is considered to be the norm...

pump action 12 ga versus 45-70 lever rifle for alaskan bear defense

pump action 12 ga versus 45-70 lever rifle for alaskan bear defense

With a carefully chosen projectile.....perhaps the shotgun. Otherwise, I’d prefer the 45-70! If all I have is the typical “across the counter” slugs..... it would be like shooting “softballs” at the bear! The typical shotgun slug, already very large frontal area and being pure (or nearly so...

    280AI or 28 Nosler

I don’t think that it comes down to ballistics “only”! Most people never thought there would be a Toilet Paper crisis....yet here we are! If I were able to actually put my hands on a large supply of brass for the 28 Nosler....I’d certainly considergo the 280 AI. 30-06 brass, or some variation...

    Rangefinder recommendations?

Thanks Jim, those numbers give even more justification for our “zero method”! That’s a bit flatter than our rifles are capable of! If you fail to put the bullet in a kill zone on a big game animal, with “only” 4” variance.....there are other , “bigger” issues in play! ;) memtb

    Rangefinder recommendations?

IMO, the only “potential “ drawback” to our zero method......is that (for our rifles) we will be approximately 6” high at around 180 yards. If you decide to shoot a Fox/coyote, ect., at around your “trajectory peak”, you will likely overshoot a small animal. Many folks initially have a problem...
