    Looking Back

My wife and I were out to breakfast this morning (happens to be last day of 4th season) and saw a friend who owns a taxidermy and meat processing business. He told me that this year was the worst year he has had since opening his business 20 years ago. The bucks and bulls were smaller than...

The Colorado Game Commission meets today. On their agenda is a recommendation to ban the use of small drones for scouting game. Seems like the explosion of availability of small drones and the small cameras has caught their attention. Also on the agenda is raising the price of non resident cow...

    Colorado GMU 8 Rumors

I am really fuming! On another website I frequent (not hunting, just shooting) I saw a post that really ticked me off. Let me quote what the writer said in part: "Seems some of the locals had some extra time on their hands during Labor day and started to hunt a bit early. I gues (sic) they...

How do yoy know when you need a new pair of boots?

During a recent backcountry hunting trip, my cousin's boots literally fell apart! They are Red Head boots and only a few years old....according to him! He had no spares and we tried several things to do a repair job on them. We even melted pitch to try and re-glue the soles. On both boots, the...

Ist Rifle Season over, 2nd starts Saturday

Looks like it was a pretty good 1st season here in the SW part of the state. I know quite a few hunters who got their elk, deer and bear. I personally attribute it to the snow on opening weekend. I also saw lots of hunters leaving with elk racks in their rigs. From what I've heard, lots of bears...

    SW Colorado B & C buck

I was by a local business last week (Adobe Milling, Dove Creek, Co) and took some pictures of a really nice buck that is on the wall there. It was shot in 4th season just north of there. The lady who shot it was very proud of it and I can see why. She said there was another buck with it that she...

My Best Chinook Salmon of 2013

Great fish. I have attached a picture of my first King (Chinook) caught in 1956 when I was 15. My Dad and I caught 3, biggest was #36, mine was #29. We caught them of Ft. Bragg, Ca in a rental skiff. I have caught several more off Southern Calif in my own boat too. It's easy to get hooked on...

    D7 Backcountry Report

Got back late last night from my hunt in the Ansel Adams Wilderness in D7. Hunting was really tough to put it mildly. Opening day was cool and clouded up with 3+" of rain, hail and snow Sat night. Rest of the week was clear and lots of wind and some more snow on the way out on Thursday. The...

    Colorado Recall Elaction is Today

The election to recall 2 elected members of the state legislature over their pro gun control vote earlier this year is today. I sure hope both of them are sent home. They are not in my area so I can't vote, but a big turnout is expected. Lots of out of state $$$ has been spent, especially by...

    Muzzleloader Supplies

I was in my local Walmart yesterday shopping for a few items for my hunting trip later this month. I always go by the sporing goods section to see what they might have thats new. Especially in the fall before hunting season, they have a lot of new items, I even saw some new compound bows and...

    Yosemite Fire

I sure hope they can get a handle on this fire and get it out ....SOON! In 3 weeks I am returning to California for our annual wilderness deer hunt. We have had fires near us before and the smoke is miserable and makes hunting tough. My family has gone to the same camp since 1946 in the Ansel...

    EHJ for August/September

I was really glad to see the story in this issue of EHJ about Brittney Black's Desert Bighorn Sheep from here in SW Colorado. I see lots of familiar landmarks in the photos and what a ram! This is the tag that I have been trying to get for years, hope one day to get lucky before I get too old...

    dog training

Dog training is really not hard, but you need lots of patience and repetition. It is never to early to start them. Obedience is the foundation for everything else. Start with simple one word commands...sit, stay, etc. Remember puppies are like kids, they have a very short attention span and need...

    My 30-06...What a pleasant surprise!

Just got back from the range this morning. Got my old sporterized Springfield dialed in. Got my new custom ballistic turret from Leupold and got it sighted in at starting yardage of 200 yds. 3 shot group of less than 2 ". The old gal is ready for deer season in September. Next week I need to...

    Last 3 Weeks.......Just a Blurrrr...time to relax a little now!

The fun part of some of these shoots is night shooting with black powder. It is awsome (and I don't use that word much!) You have to see it to believe it. I shoot a 10ga SxS shotgun at night loaded with 125 grs BP & 2 1/2 oz of shot and pull both triggers at once. The spectators are blown away...
