AZ Unit 1 elk...archery late season?

I have hunted in area 1 and 2B with my brother on his elk hunts but they were September rifle hunts except for last year he had area 1 archery. There were a lot of places where we found bulls but I don't know if they would be anywhere close during November. The country is anywhere from the...

    Seeking help from all members.....

For me climbing up the mountain is getting harder every year. Now that I am retired I work out 3 times a week, cardio and weights so the last 2 years have been much better as far as conditioning. Since I live a 2700 ft elevation it takes a couple of days to get acclimated to the 7-11,000 foot...

    More big snow

It's always good to see the state getting some good moisture. I just hope it doesn't impact the deer herd in the Ruby's and Jarbidge too harshly. Two years ago when I had an antelope tag in the Ruby Valley area we were amazed at how much of the marsh was completely dry. Heer is a pic of the...

    New smoker

I was given a smoker and can't wait to try it out. I already pre-seasoned as per instructions. I have a couple of small trout about 10 inches, without head and tail. Do they need to be fillets? Or can I smoke them whole since they are small. I looked up a few recipes and I will brine...

    Badger Hunting Nevada

A few years ago a friend of ours shot a badger with his pistol on the way to camp. When he was skinning it the smell was awful. This badger was in AZ during my bros elk hunt. Just minutes before it was fighting with a pretty big hawk over a piece if something. The hawk ended up flying away with...

    Elk behavior question

I have a question for you guys that have a lot more experience hunting elk than I do. I have found deer beds that are so deep you can tell they have been use year after year since who know when. Do elk like to use the same areas to bed year after year also? This past year we found a ridge that a...

    Things found while Hunting

I have found petrified wood while elk hut with my brother in north eastern Arizona. There is actually quite a bit of it. I found these remains of an old truck mles from any road in Nevada. I've always wondered who drove it there and whether he died there too. I found the bottom part of a shovel...

Hunting Camp Pic.s and Different Helpful Ideas for a Off The Grid Camp's

I'm not one for roughing it anymore. Especially when the weather is like this. We use a generator to keep things running smoothly and warmly. During summer antelope hunts which are in August here in NV it's nice to run the AC during the heat of the day.

    What DIY hunting means

Maybe I'm wrong here but when someone says their hunt was DIY doesn't that mean they did in their own? I just read an article in the lastest EHJ about one of the hunters who drew one of the Silver State tags. He hunted with a friend who is a guide but he didn't pay him because he was a friend...

    Dew claws

Ok here is a question for you guys that have a lot more elk hunting experience than I do. Do cow elk have dew claws? Obviously the bulls have dew claws but when we find tracks should we automatically dismiss those tracks that show no dew claws? Or perhaps bulls have more pronounced dew claws.

    Son's Bull Elk

We just got back from a great week of hunting for my son's bull elk. Hunted hard all week and saw elk every day. Lots of cows and small bulls. We saw quite a few big bulls as well but some were in places that would have been nearly impossible to pack out. This bull was one of a group of 5 bulls...

    Arizona elk hunt

Here are a few shots of the amazing country my brother and I hunted in AZ last month. He had opportunities at some small bulls but was holding out for a big one. He didn't fill his tag but we had a great hunt. I never knew bugles we so loud when the bulls are screaming at you from 20-30 yarfs...

    Hard work paid off

Just spent 13 days hunting elk with my brother on his AZ archery tag. Every day was up at 2:30 am and climbng some incredibly steep canyons up and down. We had a small 5 point at 27 yards on the second day of hunting but he elected to pass. Hd several other close encounters but no shooters. The...

Over the last two days we got after them but were not able to get one in bow range. We found their bedding...

    Edible mushrooms?

I've been in Arizona helping with my brothers elk hunt for the last week and these mushrooms are all over the mountains under many pine trees. The immature one look just like the button mushrooms you buy in the store and this is what they look like when the mature. Any of you guys know if they...
