    Coues Deer

Ok, someone explain to me why shooting a midget version of a whitetail gets people excited? I understand the country they live in is fun to hunt, but I can't imagine seeing a deer that just cracks 100" and getting all hot and bothered over it. What am I missing?

    Starting the season

Off for a 4 day spot and stalk hunt in Central South Dakota on some private land. Hopefully I'll have some good pictures to share next week! I go with one other hunter, last year neither one of us tagged out, so I'm betting there are some bruisers running around there.

What order do you tighten the straps on your pack?

I remember an eastman's episode where David Long did a segment on which straps and in what order you want to tighten down to secure your pack when you are putting it on. Does anyone remember that? If there's a link to a clip that would be great, but if someone has the info I'd appreciate it...

    Cheap weights for training

Here's a tip I recently put into action. If you want to train with some actual pack weights with your pack (40-80lbs) here's a good cheap way to get that together. Get a bathroom scale. Go to Lowes/ Home Depot and get sandbags like they use for flooding get 3 or 4 of them. Mine were...

    Frame Packs

I bought a couple of these from this guy recently. Been loading them up with 60 lbs to train and they seem to handle up to that weight fairly comfortably. Good product not from one of the major manufacturers, seems like about 1/3rd of similar name brand alternatives. I am liking mine so far...

How far in do you go? How far out would you pack one?

I did some scouting in Colorado over the 4th in the unit we are hunting this fall. I found some good areas and I think we have a decent chance in those areas that are accessible by ATV and then going in 3 or less miles on foot. Some of the best areas I found though are not anywhere close...

    Gunnison area anyone?

I will be staying in Gunnison the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th of July to do some scouting for our planned 2nd rifle elk hunt later this year. Anyone live in the area and want to catch a beer one evening?

    Training? When do you shoot?

So like most of you here, I am starting to train for the fall for a couple mountain hunts. This includes a mixture of cardio training, strength training, and shooting the bow. My question is how often or when do most of you shoot? Do you shoot first and then workout or vice versa? Also...

    South Central units archery deer

I'm really conflicted on which unit to apply for this year. Myself and a buddy are looking to do the January archery deer hunt. We don't need to kill monsters, anything around or above P&Y mins would be great. Really mostly looking for good opportunity, if we were trophy hunting we would be...

    Tripod?

I hunted last year with a primos trigger stick bipod and decided I need something a little more stable. I have seen the bog pod tripod that has the fold out arm to hold the butt of the gun that can give you a rock solid standing rest in the field. I may get that one, but wanted to check and...

    Best mobile antelope decoy?

Going to try spot and stalk antelope again this fall. What is the favorite decoy for being mobile and trying to lure in a goat? I know the Montana decoy is a good one, just wanted to see if there were some other recommended brands to look at before I bought one of those.

    Super tag drawings

Since the odds are about a million to one I don't think anyone is disadvantaged by sharing this intel. CC'd from a sports afield in 2006: "Arizona: Big Game Super Raffle chances for bighorn sheep $25, elk $20, antelope, buffalo, Coues deer, and mule deer $10 each; black bear and turkey $5 each...

    Gila 2nd rifle elk

Bear in my Lap I was trying to post the whole story, but instead I will just put up these photos and some links. During 16D 2nd rifle in the Gila. Relevant excerpt from my write up: We sat backs to an alligator juniper about 80 yards up on the hill from the water. The wind picked up and...
