    Grizzly bears delisted

Looks like grizzly bears have been delisted, at least in the Yellowstone area for now. When do we get to hunt them? :) http://billingsgazette.com/news/state-and-regional/montana/article_3e512da0-0519-5510-b387-811c675d8c3d.html

Is packing out game for money considered an outfitter only activity in Idaho?

Looking at doing a backpack trip for moose this year in a wilderness area. The only outfitter in this area would be willing to do a guided hunt that is beyond my budget. Also, I'm more of a diy hunter. The outfitter has guides at that time of the year just doing guided elk and deer hunts and is...

    Area 9 December tag

Here's a late season unit 9, smaller 6x6 bull my wife shot back in 2005. We only had 4 days to hunt due to time constraints, took this on the 2nd day and the next day packing out. There are a lot of access roads and found the elk about a mile and 1/2 in from the road. Elk were feeding heavily at...

    Locator Beacon - Any advice?

Going to be doing some solo hunts this year in more remote areas, does anyone have experience using the locator beacons to pinpoint your location if something happens in case of an emergency?

    moose

ivorytip, different areas, 2 of them easier hunts and the one I drew is more challenging, bigger bulls though. Got real lucky. Bears are out, just had them come into baits 3 nights in a row, either at night or I was at the wrong bait. Ended up calling in a turkey and shooting a smaller one...

    Unit 1 bear

here's a pic of one coming into the bait last night. This was a unit close to 1. Access is still an issue, if the snow doesn't get you, fallen trees blocking roads will.

    3 Legged Elk

Just saw this elk today feeding in a field. She seemed to be doing well despite having only 3 legs. Sorry, couldn't get the picture to rotate.

SE Montana- Cabin or Ranch lodging help

I posted about a cabin in Idaho I was thinking about renting near Salmon. Just putting finishing touches on it. River lot, lots of elk, deer, sheep, goats, bears, fishing, etc. Might be interested in renting, depending on time, as I'm hunting there during the fall.

Tire chains - Back or front tires?

In deep snow and ice, is it better for tire chains to be on the back or front tires for 4wd gas truck? I can see the benefits from either way. Does it matter if you have a limited slip rear end? Sometimes I will chain up all fours, although that can be a hassle.

    Cow elk and mountain goats

Here's a cow elk son-in-law took last week in central Idaho. We'll try to get another this week for my daughter. Getting a little cold with morning temps single digits (at least the meat stays cool). Also, some mountain goats in WY getting their salt (at least that's what I think they're doing).

Salmon cabin rental - anyone interested?

Here's a pic of a steelhead that was caught a couple of miles from Elk Bend last year by my wife. Another couple of weeks and the steelhead should be running good there! We watched a herd of elk grazing on the mountain behind her from our camp there.

Salmon cabin rental - anyone interested?

I'm building a small cabin in Elk Bend 20 miles south of Salmon, ID with river frontage on the Salmon river to be used as a hunting/fishing getaway for myself. It will have separate bedroom, kitchen, fire pit, bbq, etc. Units 28,29, 30, 37, 37A are close. Since I will only be there for a few...

    Funny bear story

Just got back from bear hunting and took a chocolate black bear over bait. It was a smaller bear, 1st one for me and in an area with 2 tags allowed. The F&G are trying to reduce bear populations, so I wasn't too concerned about harvesting a small one. We baited 5 sites throughout the week...

Moose Tag North Central Idaho fires-any local info

Checking to see if anyone in north central Idaho has information about the fires and smoke in the areas of Unit 12? The National forests are closed to entry, I believe according to the Lolo Pass Ranger station, and my wife has a bull moose tag waiting to use. I was trying to go up there a week...

Onx Hunt Map cards or Trax Map GPS SD cards? and which model GPS?

Wanting to upgrade old Garmin GPS to newer model with SD card capability. Has anyone have experience with either Onx Hunt SD cards for GPS or the Trax cards? Also, which model GPS to use. I would like a larger color screen, mid priced with a SD card slot, preferably Garmin. What does the 24K...

Idaho Unit 12-2 Moose hunt any help?

Trying to find a couple of areas in Idaho's unit 12-2 to hunt bull moose this weekend for a few days. Hunted a couple of weeks ago in the Lily lake area and saw a small bull. Spoke with the NFS at a lookout on Beaver Ridge by Beaver Lake and she said the moose by the lakes there were killed by...

    Spring Bear Baiting SE ID

Wanting to try spring bear hunting in SE Idaho this year. Newbie at this hunt and thought baiting might be the best way to go. Couple of questions. Since I have access to free stale donuts, chips, old burritos/sandwiches, soda (all out dates from vending supplier), should I try to bait or spot &...

Tex Creek Elk Hunt Unit 69

Looking to see if anyone has hunted the Tex Creek elk hunt in SE Idaho and can provide any pointers. I've been in the area a few times during the summer, just don't know where to begin to find a spot to hunt. The WMA seems to be snow dependant for migrating herds. We received a fair amount of...

    Llamas for a pack animal?

Has anyone used llamas for packing? Buying a house and the current owner wants to leave his 2 llamas there. So has anyone used these for packing out game and hunting? Are they easy to care for?
