I have a good idiot car story as well........

My 19 year old son moved back home for the summer from the college dorm. He stated the check engine light has been on for the last two weeks. I took the car to Autozone where they ran the codes and it showed up as a problem with the EVAP system. I'm all too familiar with EVAP issues on GM products. I figured it was another purge or vent solenoid. I then took the kids to piano practice and stopped at the gas station. To my surprise, the gas cap was completely gone. Check engine light explained.

Got home and questioned my son.

Me: What happened to the gas cap?
Son: I don't know.
Me: How long have you been driving without a gas cap?
Son: About a month.
Me: So when you realized you were missing a gas cap; did you say to yourself. 1. Gee, I don't have a gas cap. I think I'll run up to Autozone, a 10 minute drive from the campus, and purchase a new gas cap. OR 2. Gee, I don't have a gas cap. I'm too busy drinking beer and boning chicks. I think I'll just drive the car without a gas cap; allowing dirt and water to get into the tank. Screw the check engine light.
Son: I told mom.
Me: Glad to see that $17,000 tuition bill for the year is paying off.
