Mountain Lion Calling

I have tried a few time with my Fox Pro. No luck. I have also heard of guys using it and have been successful.

My hunting parter and I have called in 2 lions while coyote hunting. Both were while units were closed to lion hunting. Kinda gives you a weird feeling while walking out of stand. Could have killed both of them.

I have also called them in while calling coyotes. They make specific calls for calling them in but I don't know that I could ever sit and TRY to call one in.... They are too sneaky for me!

I have heard people calling them in with a cow elk or distress call. A distress fawn call as well. South Dakota cannot use dogs so they have to call or stalk every year. They usually end up getting their quota filled before the season ends. Just find out the main source of food for them and use that as a call.

got a couple friends that call them in useing a deer in distress. they turn the call on and dont shut if off. they do at least a 45 to 60 min stands.

Haven't tried calling one in on purpose but I have called two in while calling coyotes. The first came in to a rabbit in distress about 15 min into the set. The other came in to a fawn distress about 30 secs into the set. Both were sitting looking at me by the time I saw them. I never saw or heard either of them coming in. Freakin spooky if you ask me. Good luck and keep your eyes peeled. They are really quiet when they want to be!

I have a couple odd stories. sjsmallfield, your experience reminded of what happed to a friend while calling coyotes. He had a weird feeling and looked behind him and about 5 yds away was a mtn lion crouched down watching him. Probably getting ready to pounce on him. He stould and yelled and waived his bow. It just stood up and walked away...No fear of humans anymore because they are sacred in Ca..In some areas the deer numbers, etc. are so low that they get brave and hungry and attack people. I know you know this. About 25 yrs. ago I was walking in towards an old lady's pear orchard that she said a bear was braking the limbs. I had a bow and was walking through a plowed field. It was just starting to get light and I could make out some object in the field about 30 yds from me that was moving around. I looked through my binos a cr@p ! it was a BIG tom mtn. lion. He dug a hole in the plowed field and took a dump, coverd it up and walk back towards the hiils. I don't think he even saw me. But I thought maybe he did and didn't care ? I said fck that and walked back to my truck. That was before the protected status.
I have a couple other mtn. lion stories but I'll spare you but will tell you a kind of funny one. There was a taxidermist/trapper that lived up in Wildwood Canyon near Yuciapa. He was a big cat trainer ( I know this post is long, hang with me, it's 3am). He had 2 adult female and one huge male mtn. lion that he got from the Canadian Fish and Game. It was the meanest thing I've even seen. It's head was as big as pumpkin. I have pics of it snarling inside it's incloser about 2 ft. from him. Made my hair stand on end. It wouldn't breed with his females, just fight with them. He said he was going to kill it and do a life size mount. Anyway he had a half grown female that was declawed but had all of it's teeth... It was on a long chain hooked to a stake outside it's inclosuer. He always told me not to ever turn you back on a cat. I was playing with the "half grown" mtn. lion that was as strong if not stronger than me. It got bored after it kicked my azz and walked back to it's inclosuer. I turned around and started to walk away , yes turned my back, and in an instant about 65 lbs of lion was on my back with my neck in its mouth .I spun around at the same time trying to grab her and then she let go. I think he saw my friend the trainer coming at her and let go. It didn't brake skin but I'm sure it could of done some damage it she wasn't playing, My friend got very pizzed off at me and the cat. Whacked the cat one and put her back in it's cage. I felt bad for the cat and went over to the chain link . It could get about 3 toes through it. I put my fingers up to her paw and like a human it pulled my had up to the chain link so fast and strong it freaked me out. I told her good bye after that. He moved to Co. not long after. Okay, Im done ! hope your eyeballs didn't fall out.Do I have the record for longest post ?

Not even close.
I had a cat come in behind me last year on the rifle opener here in CA. Turned around and had a cat at about 15-20yds crouched down. That cat didn't spook either. Just turned and walked away into the brush. It gave me a whole different outlook on cats.

I know you had a 3S tag didn't you? Pretty scarey feeling when they don't fear you. Notice how the always come in from behind ? I talked about mtn. lions with two Game Wardens at my orentation class... for the bighorn tag I drew. I had been taking pictures a close as 30 yds. In San Gorgonio Wildernees log before the ever had a hunt there. Had some printed in magazines. The two wardens weren's mtn. lion lovers by any means and understood the problem. The explained what a 3S tag was to me...

Friends I hunt with in Az. always have lion tags with them, in case of an opportunity ... The last time I have seen any lions was in Ut. about 5 yrs. ago. Watched a mom and baby working their way up the canyon towards me. I never shot at them because of the youngin. The rancher got pizzed that I didn't

Years ago my uncle and his friend were archery hunting elk in CO. They were set up doing some cow calling when a mtn. lion came in to the call very fast. They let him get as close as they felt comfortable with and he still didn't stop, so they shot him and killed him. They made the mistake of sharing the story with a local they knew, who shared it with the fish and game. They left the cat but both took a claw. Within a week some guys showed up from fish and game to his house, in KS, to reclaim the claw. Nothing else happpened, but I guess they needed the shovel, and shut up part of the tag also.

When it happened to me, the worst part was the cat didn't run off, it just slinked back into the woodline. I thought it was going to try another angle on me, so I decided discretion was the better part of valor and abandoned my makeshift blind at the waterhole for a glassing spot that would make sneaking up on me much more difficult.
In hindsight, I probably should have shot earlier because I am not sure there was much I was going to be able to do once he was inside 35yds with only a bow, and wrestling a lion doesn't seem like fun.

Remember you guys, like the big cat trainer said ( and I didn't remember) don't turn your back on a cat.Keep an eye out behind you... I was talking with Sawfish yesterday about X10,X9A and X12 and remembered and encounter of sorts in X9A 2006. A friend and I were riding our quads up McGee Mtn. We had passed some doe's on one of the switchbacks. The next switch back two mtn. lions came from the uphill side of me , across the road running down hill in the direction of the deer. They were sub adult size. I think I ruined their stalk on those deer I passed. I thought ha ha too bad ! I have a friend in Ut. who's bother was riding a quad and a deer went flying right in front of him and he slammed on the brakes and a couple seconds later a mtn. lion came off the upside of the hill and plowed right into him and knocked him off the quad ! The lion got up and continued down the hill towards the deer. I don't think he's lying to me. He's not a BS'er. That would of freaked the heck out of me.
