It's one of the most limited elk tags in the whole state! Drive down, shoot big bull, pack him out, drive back to Oregon, share pics!

Obviously it won't be that easy but it's your 1st post and I had to give you $hit. I have no advice, except enjoy every aspect of it, you'll not likely be back to hunt it again. And welcome aboard, stick around and share a little about yourself and I'm sure you'll get some pointers.

Hi Mike. There are several threads with good info on this area if you do a search. Desert elk can be really fun to hunt. Hope you have a great time. This area is in high demand due to the terrain and general visibility of elk imo. Trophy quality is good but not amazing. Plan to shoot a 300 class bull in a really cool setting and you won't be disappointed.

I would call the regional game and fish office too. Other than that, just cover a lot of ground with your eyes and tires until you find them.

Actually, in that unit...there are places where you won't even have to pack it. Two tracks on flat ground where the elk live...

We drew two tags there in 1990. Arrived cold with almost no intel on opening morning and had two bulls killed by the end of day 2, including missing a very nice bull like six different times with a new rifle (that was the end of big hunts with new rifles). Find high points and glass like you are glassing antelope in the sage. As you survey the country think of draws you can't see into from the road and take a short hike and find a glassing spot to look into them. About 10 years ago antelope hunting there, we saw elk in the Oregon Buttes area.

My dad has the unit 100 - 1 tag as well. I live near the area and plan to start scouting soon. PM if you want to compare notes.

Everything these guys have said. I had a cow hunt down that away a few years back. Pretty surreal hunt...popping over a sage brush covered hill and seeing 20 elk bedded.

Have a blast and good luck.
