Any members willing to share some public or private land info in western Nebraska? I am looking for a place take my son in-state for a camping trip that is out of the norm for us. We have decent whitetail hunting but would like a change of scenery this fall. I have researched every large piece of ground on-line but ground knowledge would be a huge help. Don't need huge deer but would like to end up in a place with a few mule deer to chase around during the November rifle season. Send me a PM if you have anything your willing to share- thanks.

Hilltop, the rifle season is pretty crazy and I haven't hunted it for years. The muzzle loader season is better quality of hunt as far as not much pressure. I can get you on some private ground around here and there is some public but it gets hit hard during the rifle season. Deer numbers are good so far. We haven't been hit with EHD like most of the state. Southwest Nebraska in the Frenchman unit but I haven't checked to see if any tags are left. They usually sell out for mule deer on first day. The rain we have had this year has the pastures still green and a lot of cover. I'm expecting a great year for quality. Won't be a problem finding a place to hunt if your interested.

Based on my turkey hunting in Crawford and Chadron this past spring I would not hunt the public ground in those areas. Did not find any sheds, no skeletons and maybe a handful of deer. Actually seen more elk in Ft. Robinson than we seen deer. Im sure there are deer there, but unless I was blind I just didnt see them.

Would you guys have any advice on taking a kid (my son is 10) up to SW NE from Colorado for deer hunting the next few years? I just saw that youth tags are cheap. Mostly interested in antlerless, just to get him some experience.

Trying to shoot a mule deer buck on public land with a kid is going to be tough going. I live here and dont' go out on public land during gun season very often. For youth hunting opportunities Kansas has the best setup. Youth season is in September before any of the other seasons start. Deer are not pressured and still in their summer schedule.

The best hunting in this area is Turkey. Mule deer not so much.

PM me. I can find you a place to take your son deer hunting. I may not have time to go with you but can get you on some private ground where he can shoot a deer.

Awesome gesture NE!! Keep these kids in it. The ONLY 2 reasons I still guide at the base where I work is for the youth hunt, and the Wounded Warrior hunt. Too much fun and worth all of the volunteer time that goes into it.

I may hit one of you guys up when my daughter(s) are old enough to make a trip like that with me. If you don't mind of course!! I'd love to get them into some Western hunting, as I have started my western ventures really late in life.

Cobbhunts, won't be a problem when your daughters are old enough. Pretty rewarding to take the kids. Just plain fun to take others and not so serious. Have an uncle who is 75 years old with quite a bit of ground and he loves to let kids hunt on his land. Here in this area of Nebraska we have always had the highest success rate for the state. Usually about 80% in rifle. They will see lots of deer and we will make sure it's a close easy shot for their first.
