Its on my list as well. I actually have a friend that is looking to head up there so that's why I was asking about the caliber. Reading your 7mm project BB, sounds like you used either a 160 grain accubond, 168 grain Barnes LRX, or 168 grain Berger VLD. So I am guessing a 150gr Remington Premier AccuTip shot out of a .270WSM will bring a bull moose down? Any thoughts? I looked up the ft-lbs at different distances for my .270WSM and they rival the .300 WBY Mag shooting 180gr. I personally thing my gun is sufficient, but really don't know. Never been to Alaska let alone seen a one of their bulls.

I see this question all the time on every forum I have been on. To be completely honest a well placed shot no matter from a 270 a 300 a 7mm or a 338 would do the trick. Of course the larger caliber the more whamo you can get (to an extent)haha. I am a 30 cal guy myself but have friends that shoot 270wsm's religiously and swear by them. I want to go over there and hunt archery myself

tdub,

Your bullet would do the job just fine. I used 160 ABs. My partners used 300 RUMs, and the results were the same. One thing though, AK moose are HUGE. I mean, it is hard to explain just how big. I filled my empty chest freezer with over 600 pounds of CUT/GROUND MEAT. I know it is hard to believe, but they are a different creature than our Shiras. They are that big.

Now that weve got the baby at home the wife has been wanting to do family trips. Religiously I take off one week a year to hunt, but things have changed. She has been itching to go to Alaska and it has always intrigued me. We have found a middle ground finally and i think in 2013 ill be chasing sitka blacktail while she goes rafting with the half of her family that lives there( the other half would like to go hunt). And i will just do bonus points for my regular areas.

Thanks Shaun and BB for your knowledge. It just further confirmed what I was thinking. BB, a shiras moose is the only thing I have seen in person and that was here in NV which needless to say is absolutely amazing. I first thought it was a horse till I got closer and knew if wasn't. I can only imagine how much bigger the Alaskan moose are. Thanks again gents!

tdub24,

Your .270WSM will do just fine. I believe the the placement of that first shot is the most important thing. Moose are big but not terribly tough unless they get their adrenaline up. My favorite has always been a .35 Whelen but I've taken moose with rifles from .243 up to .375H&H. Just remember that your'e a few links from being at the top of the food chain up here and it will take several trips to pack a bull out. That means you will be going back to a killsite. If you hunt Montana or Wyoming much you are likely used to big predators, but be careful.

Thanks AKaviator, I figured my rifle would be sufficient but wasn't exactly sure. I have never hunted where I am not the top link, so if I am able to afford the trip, I will definitely study up and get me some quality bear spray. Their will be something like 6 folks in the group so that should keep the packing out trips low. Once again, thank you all for the information.

BB- Im impressed at the low cost of your hunt. I have been looking at the air svc's and Ill spend at least 4k maybee 6. My buddy and I have plenty of time to drive so ill have to look into that. Caribou is on my list too. If you have any advice feel free to lay it on me.

I too was surprised how affordable Alaska is. With a little research I already have one bear/deer/halibut trip booked and a caribou trip planned as soon as work slows. I'm a blue collar tradesman with two kids. Getting up there is definitely the $$. With some time spent in the regulations book and scouring maps it can be done. The hardest part for me is scheduling the time that it takes.

Alaska is on my bucket list, too. After reading this it seems more like a possibility. Kids make it hard to travel sometimes. We try to get a national park in for at least a week every year, so maybe I can combine the trips like the others said. I am not sure what I would do with 600 pounds of meat. That might last a couple years. That citric acid is a good idea. I have heard of hanging deer in a cellar or shed something for a week and then cutting the rind off. It helps to tenderize the meat I guess. I haven't tried that, no where to hang one.

For the guys who are pressed for time you might consider flying up and renting a pickup from Airport rentals http://www.airportequipmentrentals.com/vehicle_rentals.html . Another option if you want to bring your own truck/suv is taking the ferry out of Bellingham, WA http://www.dot.state.ak.us/amhs/ Personally i think flying up and renting a pickup is the best option factoring time and $$. Although if you had an Alberta deer/bear/moose tag you'd probably be able to tag out off the AlCan during the drive up;) The Anchorage airport is super easy to go in and out of for hunting. They even have freezer space for game/fish for rent. Now carting a whole moose around the airport might be a challenge but it's been done by lots of folks. The regs can get a little confusing and it's a lot of area to cover. It can be a lot of planning to get sorted after you find out what tags you drew. Hell, I live here, and after finding out my wife drew a Tok Dall tag for this August I/we went into full on prep scramble (bush plane, getting gear list tested, range time, time off etc...). AK is a big place, the logistics of getting to the place to hunt seem to me like the biggest hurdle. The lack of roads make it tough to access. Plane, ATV, jet boat, prop boat, ocean shuttle, ferry, float hunt, truck, bike, and hike. There are so many choices it's tough to focus on one type of hunt. My dad always said, "if it fly's, f**ks, or floats, rent it".

I might be interested in going after caribou in the next 2-3 years. I'm definitely someone who would love to do it on the cheap and DIY. Not sure what that would run and whether a guy can drive from the northern US to awesome caribou hunting grounds or not.

One thing I know - I'm not driving to AK from North Carolina! That doesn't mean I wouldn't share the driving from MT, ID or WA. I'd just fly that far and help drive, which I love to do anyway.

I've upped my savings budget and made some drastic cuts to some areas of my life so I can afford to go on a trip in 2017. Unless I draw the coveted wyoming sheep tag that year lol. It really is a doable deal I can't wait to try my luck at a combo moose and caribou hunt.

You live in a awesome state AKaviator. One of my hunting friends has been wanting us to hunt caribou up your way. It's on my wish list for sure.

Matt, seeing your bull picture again sure is fun and inspiring. Great photo and video as I remember. Your party sure came back home with a lot of meat to eat.

Alaska sure is a great hunting state. I sure hope to get up there one day.

I have always wanted to come up there and hunt black tails. I don't know why but those little guys just intrigue me. My wife would like to get a black bear and a caribou. Man I want to hunt those little deer.

Sigpros,

Make sure to do a Sitka Deer hunt someday. There is nothing much more fun and they are the tastiest deer I've ever eaten! The Kodiak population is rebounding...not where it once was, but getting better. It's my favorite hunt in Alaska!
