Peachtree City, GA.
Me and a buddy literally were discussing Alaska tonight. Definitely would be interested if I thought I could get it done reasonably. Just so damn far and it's overwhelming the amount of planning that has to go into such a trip.

^^ just do it! Even a bad trip to Alaska is one to remember!
yea, they make you never want to return and if you do go, try to hunt on federal land, versus state. the state of Alaska will be of no help at all if you get screwed\taken\ stolen from your outfitter. the feds though will try to help you. I have a whole new feeling on states rights after, what occurred last year.

Tim, you got tied into an unscrupulous guide, we certainly have some up here. There are lots of outstanding guides too. It take lots of planning and checking references to sort them out sometimes. I regret that your trip went so sour.

I would be careful comparing the Feds to the State. I watched as a fair number of hunter on Federal lands were denied their "trip of a lifetime" during the government shutdown because the Feds would not allow them to use "federal land", with absolutely no recourse. We constantly are dealing with the federal over-reach of the feds dictating how the state tries to manage wolves, set seasons on furbearers and the methods of take on hunting game. They shut the state down based on "policies" not on science or good management strategies. Policies that come from D.C. and prevent some Alaskans from subsistence practices that have gone on for eons.

Some of the legal issues you have are not best dealt with by the state in the criminal court arena but may be better in the civil court . I won't get into the merits of of either with you. I know it's been a frustration to you but don't convict Alaska based on one bad experience when there are many many hunters every year that do have a great experience here.

You had more then a bad hunting trip. Sounds like you were cheated!! Alaska is a great place to hunt! Don't let this person rob you of the experience you could have in Alaska!

Pioneer outfitters finally paid me back on the combo dall sheep\moose hunt that they no showed on. I got my hunt cost back, but was still out the airfare to and from AK, rental car, hotels and charter flights in and out of Chisana and the tip to the people working for pioneer outfitters that was there, when the outfitter and guides weren't.
The wrangle national park and preserve has been good to work with. The Alaska big game commercial services board, well lets just say, I have been very underwhelmed at there service. This hunt was supposed to take place in September of 2013. The Alaska big game board is still trying to figure stuff out. I think. I haven't heard from them in a long time.

Glad you got some restitution finally. What a pain for you to have to go through.

I'll correct a of point of yours however. The department of Commerce and Economic Development has an investigative unit that you were working with. Once they complete an investigation they present a sanction recommendation to the big game commercial services board. The Commercial Services Board is a 9 member board appointed by the Governor and are all uncompensated for their time. The board itself is not involved with the case until it is presented to them by the Dept. of Commerce investigators. Then, they can vote to approve the sanctions, request tougher sanctions or not approve it at all. In your case, the board has not yet seen the results of the investigation and therefore has had no influence on the case. They do not have the authority to impose restitution by the guide to you in either case. Civil court would be your only remedy for that.

Your gripe is with the with the Dept. of commerce investigators. Their workload is staggering and their budget is small but, I will agree, they need to aggressively pursue the case against Pioneer Outfitters.

I guess I have just been bitter about the whole expierence. I will say the fish and game office and the state trooper out of Tok have been awesome.

My case was forwared to the individual on the board in October. In December I got a letter addressed to the wrong person, about a complaint with the outfitter that was dated 2012. Haven't heard a thing since. So I guess I am a little surprised at the how long the process takes and the lack of communication. Either way I got paid, and will not be going back to Alaska to hunt sheep.
