Thanks for the info RICMIC! I think after talking to one of the local game wardens in Sheridan county we are still going to put in for Region C for deer, yes there has some winter kill of fawns but overall the up side he said was that the summer and fall was very good food wise and all the animals went into winter in very good health. Now to zero in on a few pieces of BLM or State land to try and get away from the crowds that everyone talks about. Homework time.

Well, now I think we kind of changed our tune. Looking into Y more, mostly because in 3-4 years we can draw an elk tag for the northern part of this region for elk. Kind of learn the lay of the land a bit and then in a few years maybe hit the ground running better. Anyone ever stay in one of the Forest Service Cabins?

Good news on the South central deer at G&F meeting last night. Mule deer numbers are up and lots of bucks in the areas where point restrictions were implemented few years back. Point restrictions are gone and seasons are longer with more younger aged bucks. Buck to doe ratios are good in most areas and fawn production is doing good also. Due to flight and ground conditions they saw more animals this fall than ever. Bull to cow ratios are also up for elk as is calving ratio for cows.

Sounds like a good time to get some kids out hunting and fill the freezers.

I'm not sure I'd put south central Wyoming in the "lots of bucks" category. It's nice to hear a positive perspective and weather - wise we've wound up in decent shape (so far), but I wouldn't go that far.

I know the numbers they counted and it was surprising. Ratios are great right now: buck/doe and fawn/doe
Doesn't mean bucks are everywhere but definite improvement over past years.
You should have been at the meeting. Surprising elk numbers also.

They stated that the older age class deer bore the brunt of the hunting during the 3 pt restriction and now the buck to doe ratio needs adjusting. Fawn ratio was also very good so deer numbers are rebounding somewhat.
Area 81 had a tag decrease due to the 87 tags turned back in last year due to the Beaver Creek Fire. They will hunt this year.

Hey im sitting in Phillips rihgt now! Born and raised, terrible pressure here nothing like out west. Get in a few miles and use the glass, youll do fine, A has a ridicoulous amount of deer, not too many big bucks though but for a 140max type hunt that would be good. C has less public but some good average bucks maybe a 150-160 is possible especially with a trespass fee. Some whoppers come out of Y to the winter range each year, they are going to be tough to find though in that thick timber. So my pick would be A or Y.

Sweet, Phillips is a nice area! Id prefer to do more spotting and stalking than sitting on a trail in the thick timber. I get plenty of seat time here in Wisconsin during the year, so id like to be a little more mobil out there. Maybe southern Y is more that style instead of the thick timber?
