4 non resident elk hunters are looking to do a Archery trip in unit 11 in 2 yrs and we were wanting to start gathering info about the area. We have always had a guide and have hunted unit 63 but this trip we would like to do it on our own. Any suggestions on where to camp, hunt and what to expect..ETC... Thanks

We're going to need to know a little about you and your group before we put that info out there.
Slip over to New Members and give us an intro.

I was advised that if I gave a little more info about myself I may get more responses. Anyway, there will be 2 adults and a teenager hunting with me. I'm the old man of the group 50 the other others mid 30s. Two of us are police officers in Charlotte NC, by the time of the hunt I should be retired with 30yrs. The group has been hunting whitetails for 12 yrs together in the mountains of NC. I'm not sure about the tag 1 or 9 cause we have always used a guide. Right now each hunter has 3 points each... We haven't done any research on a starting point. We original were going to go with an outfitter, Tangle Ridge Outfitters, great outfit and people but the younger guys said why don't we try to do it ourselves. I'll be retired so I said sounds good to me. So I started to play around on the computer and found this forum.. One of the hunters picked unit 11 and that is where we are at....Thanks Andy

Hi Andy,

Welcome to the forum and thanks for your service. Unless there is a change in the drawing odds, you likely won't be able to draw area 11 in two years. The type nine archery tag took a minimum of 8 points to draw last year in the regular pp draw. In the special, it took 7 points to guarantee the tag. There will likely be some point creep for the area so you are more than likely 5 or so years away from being able to hunt there. You could draw a general tag next year and be hunting... Lots of options out there with a general tag in hand.

I've been chasing 11 for several years, don't know if I'll catch it with point creep. If I were you I'd go general tag! Another option would be to apply separately, put 11-1 as first choice, and 11-4 (cow) 2nd choice. Everyone should end up with at least a cow tag and somebody might get lucky and pull a bull tag.

Good luck with your planning.

Hello all, I luckily drew a unit 11 tag, type 9 this year. I will be attending the University of Wyoming for school. Have lots of experience elk hunting but have never hunted this area. I was wondering if you could point be in a certain area or a better place to stay towards when hunting this area? I'm not looking for honey holes or anything special, just some good info? Thank you!
