After applying for most of 30 years I finally drew.
I'm a 62 year old grandpa that's had 2 knee surgeries in the past 2 years.
I want to do it myself, and I am looking for information about the area. I live in Powell so I am close, but looking for places to start scouting.

I'm hoping by fall to be back in shape. I was hiking a couple miles last fall with a torn meniscus, so I figure I should be able to do better than that. I don't have horses, but I do have access to some.
I'm hoping to hear from someone that hunted the area that I could pick their brain.

Wish I could help you, but can't as I know nothing of the area. I do know much of mountain hunting is mental, I think you'll be fine. I'll be in unit 6 after a Sheep, with a 50% impairment in my right leg, I think I'll be fine. I won't over do it, and I won't quit. The hare and the tortoise... Good luck on your hunt and consider using the ponies.

I hunted area 1 last year (2014) Went out twice , Once first Sept , then again in October. I was 63 then( Now 64) Took a nice ram in North Crandall creek. First time out was with friends that live in Worland. They never hunted sheep in the area before but had hunted deer and elk. Theyhad to hunt under another outfitters permit. They have their own outfitting business. Have hunt sheep in 2011 , 2012, 2013 in area 2. Also hunted in area 5 a few times for sheep. We did a back pack hunt. Hunted in sunlight bassin , Black mt. VERY rugged area. They said that it was the toughest hunt that they had ever been on Physicially. Saw a few rams in 10 days. Got a shot at one Ram at 450 + yards. No luck. Bad weather came in on Sept 10 . Went home, came back Oct 3 this time my friends suggested a outfitter who has hunted the area for 23 yrs and has their base camp in area 1 and also uses horses. Crandall creek Outfitters, Corey Fischer. These guys know the area and we say sheep the first evening in camp. Say a total of 12 Rams while I was hunting with them. Nothing big until the 3 rd day. only 1/2 and 3/4 curels. Corey said we could do better. On the 5th day Oct 9th I got my ram . 397 yrd shoot. Ram scored 170 5/8 inch BC Pictures on Bowsite.

Elkhunter25 good luck going DIY. You may consider researching a decent guide to have in your back pocket just in case. Eating deer/elk soup isn't filling.. but eating Sheep tag soup would be really tough to swallow after putting in for 30 years!

I know the cost of an outfitted hunt is not a reality for many of us but I strongly recommend you hire an outfitter to pack you in to a drop camp. The cost won't be overwhelming and you won't have to live and eat like a coyote. The hunt will be more enjoyable and the outfitter will likely give you some pointers on where to look for sheep.

Greg here from My Hunt Logistics, my wife drew a sheep tag this year. I have guided a few friends, make sure you bone up on trophy judging, the best way to judge size is by looking at body size and it helps if you have more than one in front of you, so you can compare.

I've been watching this thread since June. I guess there are not to many who have hunted area 1 in the past. I was hopeing elkhunter 25 would get more feedback. I curious for myself also to compare notes on this area. I know last year I could find little about it on the web. Spoke with a few outfitters before I put in for the draw about it. Only one person a non re also who had hunted it, and that was 15 years prior. Hope elkhunter 25 found the info he was searching for.
