Scouting-as in a summer camping trip for several days-is what I do and what I recommend-after data mining the internet, speaking to the biologist, game warden for the area you're interested in . Yes, the animals might not be exactly in the same spot come October, but at least you'll get a rough idea as to what is living there and what could be shot come hunting season. You'll also learn how to access the unit ahead of time by doing this summer scouting/camping trip. If this isn't possible, then hiring a guide/outfitter might be another option. Yes, it costs money, but you are paying for their knowledge of how to hunt an area; and that comes at a price.

Thanks for the input prerylyon have you hunted this region?
'OW,

Not for deer; but spent some time this summer scouting in there; also hunted antelope last month inside that area. Just a few days boots on the ground during both trips, so not much time for me to see a whole lot.

I found the access to public huntable lands challenging in Johnson county-where I was in C. If I was going after deer there, I would probably line up/pay for some access to private ground if I had invested in and drawn a buck tag. That being said, if someone lived close enough to that area, or could otherwise more invest the time ahead of the season in learning where the animals hang out in some of the patchwork BLM, its probably entirely doable on public.

Well a long time ago when I was younger I hunted this unit and I remember I enjoyed hunting that kind of terrain, i don?t remember to much about the area I was young. The second reason is I just want to mule deer hunt and pronghorn hunt at the same time as a solo hunt. Ideally I would love to find some private land to pay and hunt but onX maps has treated me very well and I see enough land to hunt if not do you have any suggestions on an area? HighPlainsHunter?
