Was at the Eastern Chapter of the Wild Sheep Foundation's Convention on Saturday night and the 2nd Wyoming Governor's Bighorn Sheep tag was the last item on the auction list. It went for $86,000, up from $76,000 last year. The first one at the Reno show went for $95,000. Good money going for a great cause.

Personally, I disagree with the idea of auctioning off our public resources to the highest bidder. The idea that if you have deep enough pockets you can cut to the front of the line for our wild sheep does not sit well with me. Some will say "good money for a great cause." Well we already have good money going to that cause through our draw system and other donations from organizations. I know many who volunteer their time but are not rewarded with a tag or may never hunt sheep. Thats's admirable. If we need to raise money that bad make a small increase to every application that would equate to the money raised from those tags.

I know that it sounds like a lot, but those auction tags are tax deductible donations. A lot of guys actually buy these tags based on the economics of it. An outfitted hunt in Alberta is very expensive (I'm just guessing but $50K now??) and success rates aren't typically stellar. Buying a Wyoming auction tag, taking the deduction, then hiring an outfitter to hunt a high success unit is not a heck of a lot different, and probably far cheaper if you have to go to Alberta twice to kill your ram.

good point and I would argue a tax deduction is not appropriate, as they are getting back in return the full market value of what they paid by definition because it's an auction (fair market value is easy to determine)

I fully agree with you, the deduction should only be what exceeds market value, but I am not sure it is always treated that way.

I tend to agree brushcreek, last year in Reno the California unlimited tag went. For over $300,000, that money goes to putting and keeping sheep on the mountain! Wyoming's tag this year was one on the cheapest if and none of us calls $90,000 cheap or a bargain!

I'd be curious how these auctions work compared to raffles. At $10 a ticket and you could buy as many tickets as you want.

Would that raise even more money, or less??? It certainly would give everyone a chance, thought a very slight chance for those who only buy a ticket or two.

The way i look at it is the auction winner who spends big money on auction tags could be using that money instead to buy a vacation home or fund a private jet. Which would benefit nobody but himself! I like that the auction money gets put back into conservation, it?s all a great cause
