Finally after many years, I have a unit 61 antelope tag in Wyoming. I have hunted antelope several times, but have never been in unit 61.

The way I have always hunted antelope is cover as much ground as possible and look over as many bucks as possible, until I find the right buck.

The biggest obstacle I have, is I only have 3 days to hunt, but I definitely want to make the most of this, likely, once in a lifetime hunt.

I noticed the southern portion of the unit is all checkerboard, so I assume the bulk of it is off-limits.

If anyone could point me to some general starting points, at least to get a start, I would certainly appreciate it.

Good luck on your hunt!
Haven't drawn such a prestigious tag myself, but it sounds like your previous strategy would serve you well in 61 also.
I'll be watching for pics!

Congratulations on the tag. I hunted 100 elk last fall. That would be 92 and 60 antelope. Maybe part of 61 also.
The checker board you mentioned was mostly open to hunting with a few exceptions. Anadarko owned most of the checkerboard with exceptions. I contacted Anadarko last year and was told they don't give permission but their lands are open to recreation (hunting) unless marked otherwise. Landownership changes so do a little research. OnX maps is worth it's weight in gold. Goodluck

I hunted 61 many years ago. Back in the day, we used to buy our permits on opening morning in Rawlins and then go shoot our antelope and be back in Laramie by noon. Times have changed... Most of the checkerboard at that time was open to hunting. As recent as 5 years ago they actually had "Open Hunting" signs posted on many of the gates. Always good to check it out for yourself as things can and do change. Good luck on your hunt.
