I applied for Unit 1 for doe tags. Talked to Game Warden - he said he thought I and partner could get a few antelope. First trip - not a trophy thing, an experience life kind of thing.

No one talks about Unit 1.

Wondering about the crowds and availability of animals. Anyone care to share their experience(s) with Unit 1?

I have hunted 1 for a few years, but always on a friends ranch. I don't know how much public land there is in 1. I thought it was mostly private land. Good news there are a ton of animals in 1 including some nice bucks. Bad news may be tough to get a place to hunt without having to pay.

Exactly my thought.

I haven't hunted there I guess, but I do see some antelope out there. I haven't tried to get to the BLM sections in the north part, but its a good 40 miles of dirt road out there from everywhere which does limit the crowds a little I think.
There are some decent gravel roads to get close to those sections. Might check out how to access stuff from the Little Missouri Road, if those side roads are public and what not. Its a little bit of a maze out there with little to no cell service, but you can use Devil's Tower to orient a little. One of those tougher access areas, but I think there are some animals there. Not great info, but I live kindof close so there you go, lol.

Knew there would be access issues and limited areas - the price to pay for an easy to pull unit.

I appreciate knowing there are a ton of animals - makes that part easier, I hope. I'd like a horned doe, have no idea how common they are (may put in for a buck tag for 2nd draw, just to make sure I can get a speed goat).

The main fear I have is about getting into a "Mad Max" kind of thing with folks racing around everywhere in vehicles. Is it that bad? Should we just plan on finding where we have to walk in and focus on hunting walk-in areas only?

Also - do y'all think 2 days of scouting (Friday & Saturday - season opens Sunday) is enough? Figure "everyone" will be out riding around on Saturday, giving us an idea of the pressure for Sunday morning.

Horned doe are pretty common and that's what we hunt to add some fun to it. Look them over and you can find one with little tiny prongs too. Here's a few I've taken. They will twist off pretty easily. They are usually just curved little sheaths but the one set looks just like little buck horns. My longest came off of a 14 1/2 year old doe, about 5 inches long and only one horn, she had shed the other already. Hunting doe are really fun, hope you get the tags !

Those are pretty cool wy-tex. I haven't ever saved any but I should. I had one doe when I was a kid that was similar to your big one.

From my experience hunting units with limited access; hunt the last ten days of season. Get as far from roads as you can. Most guys are not going to go far from roads. You will find lopes and few if any other hunters.

Last try Texas and New Mexico, Wyoming is a horrible state to hunt....

I hear that.

Looking forward to getting away from all the palm trees, sand, and alligators down here for a bit.
Traded sagebrush, mud, and antelope for a trip to South Carolina and saw my first alligators not in a zoo. Tried to run in from the rain, but then felt how warm it was and just enjoyed it

SC is nice. I deer hunted there last year - shot a decent whitetail in velvet in August. Yes - season opens in August and closes Jan 1 I think. Been wanting to do some blackwater duck hunting or even just fishing.

I think every place has it's beauty and pluses.....and the minuses.

Well, no-one called about the SuperTags, so I guess I'll be part of the group hunting Unit 1. I have 4 doe tags (no buck tags available for 2nd draw) and buddy has a buck and 2 doe tags. So that means we're definitely tag rich right now. Looking forward to the trip, started the Whole 30 Diet and a walking routine but know that going from Sunny FL to WY will be taxing but fun.

Have Rangefinder (leupold 1200i), Garmin Maps 64 GPS, shooting bipod, Danner Pronghorn Boots (breaking them in right now - pretty comfy and have stretched a bit), blaze orange beanie cap, 250 practice rounds, and more.

Still scouring the internet for tidbits about the Unit 1 and finding very little.

Someone said that a lot of the land is somewhat rugged, and actually fenced & gated - is this true?

Are the antelope primarily out in the open areas or will they also be in the more "hilly" sections too?
