WY Outfitters Want More NR Elk Tags

I am against this proposal and encourage all residents to attend the meetings for this next year. WYOGA is using increased elk numbers statewide to push for more bull tags in general areas and 4% more nonresident tags in limited quota areas. Only one general area in Wyoming has a high bull/cow ratio and it is predominantly private land. I do believe the answer to over objective elk herds in any area is more access to kill cow elk, not increased harvest of bulls.

They only want more NR tags so they can guide NR in the wilderness areas because they know we are screwed without them due to stupid laws preventing us from hunting there.

Eliminating the outfitter wilderness rule would increase NR opportunity, w/o the need to increase tags. Problem solved.....

I have lived on all sides of this issue. I was a resident guide/hunter and now am a non-resident who likes to hunt in Wyoming. I understand where the outfitters are coming from- As a guide/outfitter, it is frustrating to not have your hunters draw year after year and struggle just to book enough to pay leases. In the end, we gave up the area 7 leases we had and eventually stopped guiding all together. The ranches we had leased are now leased by a small group of very rich doctors. For the primarily private land LQ areas I wouldn't have an issue with higher non-resident allocation. The average Joe doesn't get to hunt there anyway. As far as General hunt areas go, I believe we have more than enough hunters in the National Forests. Competition is already high and success rates aren't great. I see no reason to add to the mayhem.

4% increase, how many tags are we talking about 20, 30, 100? sometimes it is nice to have the actual numbers to make a decision, versus going off of feelings.

I have never hunted Wyoming so I have no real say, just curious.

Wasn't there an outfitter in NM a few years ago who was sued the state because he thought there were not enough non-res tags, George something if I remember correctly. Of course he wasn't really interested in increasing opportunity for non-res hunters, just more money for his services.

HillTop so U are suggestion. More nonresident tags for draw units.. That are primary private... So how will F&G determine witch units.. Would hold enough private land? So would unit 7,16 and 19 hold enough private? To qualify for more nonresident tags. That would go over real well with residents.. Who cant draw a elk tag now............

Many reasons I don't elk hunt Wyoming.
As a taxpayer I cant hunt the public land that is there comes to mind. Lots of rules in WYO that need fixed however due to the money involved, pull of some groups...etc etc. It wont happen. IMO. Be nice if I was wrong.

Conrad, the short answer is no. My intention was to offer a little perspective from the other side. I think Wyoming is already very generous to non-residents in general. I do think a lot of private land that is leased for outfitting goes under hunted though. I think it would be possible to add more private land only tags to balance the hunting pressure a bit.

The outfitters will never give up, they always want more and more. They won't quit until they get "Set Aside" tags for themselves and transferable Landowner tags.

From what I understand the Wyoming legislature is considering a law that will ban people from selling game animal locations.

So if I know of a location where some nice bulls or bucks hang out I can't sell the information to someone. I guess there is a person in Utah that is developing a source to do this and they are trying to head him off.

This could be a rumor or fact, it is just something that I have heard on the internet and if it is on the internet it has to be true doesn't it?

The law is in committee.

As a resident of the great state, I strongly oppose this. Case in point...I put in for an any elk tag, and a reduced price elk tag in the regular draw....I was unsuccessful on both. I later put in for a leftover cow tag in the leftover drawing and was again unsuccessful. I was not putting in for areas that are difficult draws by any means. If I can't draw a cow tag in my own state, we sure as heck should not be offering more elk tags to non-residents when Wyoming is already more generous to NR than other western states.
