Nobody drew special gen as a 2nd choice this year. 1st choice was 39 apps short of 100%.
That is interesting. Glad I decided to select Gen as first choice in the special with one point. I guess even with a point I would have missed out if I had tried as 2nd choice. Worked last year, but not this year. Going to be tough drawing next year with point creep and no points!

Points are only used for the Preference Point draw and that draw only looks at your 1st choice. All the unsuccessful PP applicants then drop to the Random draw, with their 1st choice intact and a new random number. After they go thru all the 1st choices in that Random draw they go thru 2nd choices. Last year the special gen was a tad over 50% as a 2nd choice. I would guess in 2017 the special gen will be 150+ short of 100%.

People are starting to build plans to just go hunting. Lots of people telling us that over phones and at shows. Building points has gotten to be too tough with point creep.

That's definitely us. We can afford to do this now, and a point or two to hunt with fewer people is worth it, but life is too short to wait around building points.

If we find something worth shooting we will. If not we will enjoy our vacation.

Keeping track of just our South Dakota pp is a hassle. Add in WY for deer and CO for elk. Bleh.

I didn't draw either. I did some math looking at the 2016 draw odds...about 137 tags were given to the ones with 10 points and only about 730 applied out of the 2312 that have 10 points. With 9 points, only 112 were successful out of 2211 and 8 points 192 successful out of 2713. (these could be off a little, I couldn't account for the ones who were successful in the random draw). Ya, I obsess.
With my 6 points, I have a long time before all of the points ahead of me get used up. Especially when almost 1600 with max points didn't even apply. Just have to hope for that random draw at 2.3%.

My buddy drew a unit 45 rifle tag so I'll be going with him in Sept. with his bow! Looking forward to just calling, camping and hopefully packing a heavy load!

Try getting creative... look at type 2 tags in decent areas, then buy the archery license and get out there in September. That's what I did this year and it worked! I'll never get sucked into the points trap again... I'd rather hunt every other year (or so as that seemingly gets worse) and hopefully retire out west where I can hunt as a RES!

I think I may try to put in for a deer or antelope tag in an area where I can do some elk scouting. Or maybe, a left over cow tag. Get a little hunting in and maybe find something worth going for in the elk draw.

Just an FYI for all of the lucky tag winners in the drawing. Make sure you purchase your conservation stamp if you have not already and also be aware of the Elk Feedground Special Management Permit needed for some units in the Northwest part of the state.

Yeah this year has really changed my thoughts and plans for the future.....WRT out of state hunting. I think I'm just gonna stick with my plan of the past years and hunt as much as possible in Colorado. The creep in other states and my own is getting crazy. Thanks for all the info and education.

OK, question from a newbie. What is the points "creep"? Is it because so many people are building points each year that it is taking more and more to draw? or what.....

Yep, pretty much nailed it. A hunt that took 2 points last year, that takes 3 this year, could be said to have had point creep.

Yep. Example: 100 applied for a unit with 10 tags in 2014. Those folks had 5 points each.

In 2015, the 90 people the didn't get a tag in 2014 apply again. They now have 6 pts each.

In 2016 now you have 80 people with 7 pts applying fo the 10 tags, etc.
