How did the Mule deer and Antelope do this winter, and is the spring providing any moisture? Specific areas I am looking at are around Cody for Mule deer and South Central for Antelope. Does anyone have any info or thoughts to share?

Thanks!

Winter was fairly easy, but drought effects persist. Not conductive to horn growth, unless we get some moisture this spring. Fingers crossed!

I would expect low winter kill numbers across the majority of the west. The next 30 days are the most important to antler and horn growth. The Laramie valley just got a good storm (1+ inches water) but over the mountain to the west it didn't drop much precip at all. I'm not sure on the Cody area as I don't follow that area very closely. In the south central it doesn't take much to make a difference so keep hoping for some weather.

The spring rain/snow is helping a lot. I have been watching those numbers and they have gone up quite a bit in the last few weeks.

I agree. The smaller showers we are getting lately are probably better than the big storms that just wash away. This stuff is soaking in pretty nicely it seems like. Hopefully it continues. The snowpack is a little worrysome though, too. Glendo already seems a little low this year even after the flush of the Platte last month of whatever. The Nebraska farmers might have a leaner water year.

I am thinking of applying for 2016 season for 109 as I have max points, but haven't decided if I should pull the trigger or wait to see if the herd health gets better. Any thoughts or suggestions? I am looking to do a DIY hunt for a mature gross 180+ buck.

I don't know squat about 109 but I think you should go hunting.

That is ok, if needed I could bring a horse or 2 to pack back in, but am hoping to just be able to backpack in. Do you feel the mule deer are doing well in that area? Have you hunted this unit, for Mule deer or have you spent much time in it hunting other animals?
