It'll be a bummer but I fully expect that the season will close from the female quota being filled before the male quota is reached. It can be difficult for an inexperienced grizzly bear hunter, like me, to be 100 % sure if the bear is a boy or girl until you turn it over.
Do lots of studying and try to find people who have hunted bears before. And remember to take your time, no rush to hurry and fill right away. You dont want to be "THAT" guy! HAHA.

I just did an online quiz studying the differences. Unless your close to the bear or watch it pee, it would be dang tough to tell the difference. I would be very surprised if the hunt didn't end early due to a female harvest.

Im eating mine if i draw, cant be much different than the 3 Black bears i have ate. I agree it may be hard to tell a big female from a medium sized male, but there is no mistaking big boars. My biggest black bear i shot is a monster and there was NO mistaking him for a female, plus i seen him for 3 years and had trail cam pics also. He would be on all 4 legs in front of a 55 gallon barrel and you couldn't see the barrel behind him! He squared 6'11" came from right here in good ol' Wyoming. And he is the color of a snickers bar, matter of fact all 3 of my bears are the same chocolate brown color all from WY.

Sow for sure.... at least 64.9% sure lol. Legs norrow down towards the paw and the facial features are a giveaway according to my online identification education I took 20 minutes ago. Put that bear 150 yards away and it would look like a big old boar though.

There is a 12 bear quota... and i highly doubt it will make it to all 12 hunters. I have spent countless hours watching Grizzlies around here in what would be legal hunting areas, and aside from having cubs, telling the difference between a big sow or big boar at rifle range... good luck. Whoever shoots the sow will make people mad on both sides, but that is why this plan isn't perfect, but at least we are having a season

There is no way to kill more than 10 bears under the current regulations in areas 1-6.

There is a sub-quota of 1 female, and 10 males.

So if the first 9 bears are boars, the 10th bear is a non-issue and the season closes either way. Plus, in areas 1-6, hunters are only given a 10 day time frame to hunt. This will make it much more likely for hunters to shoot the first bear they see rather than hold out and be picky. IMO, it also increases the likelihood of a sow being killed wayyyy before the 10 bear quota is met.

Combining the 1-6 hunt, and the 12 tags in area 7...I would bet, best case, 5-6 grizzlies are killed. Of course a lot depends on who draws the tags in 7.

I have a proposal for all Eastman forums members. Since 6,000 is a little steep for my blood too why don?t we rally together? If our goal as sportsmen is to help manage these bears and there are others out there trying to prohibit the management of bears by drawing a tag, why don?t we join them by numbers.
Would you pay $300? What if we went in blocks of 20 people, have a party leader, honor system, if one person in your block draws the tag, everyone chips in $300 for them to go on the hunt.
Might have to keep this a little on the down low because I could also see non hunters following this method and blowing the stats out of the roof.
Thoughts?

I agree shootbrownelk, residents should have it a easier. However, I do feel that the $600 resident fee is a bit light for this type of hunt. If the NONresident is $6,000 then make the resident fee $3,000. This is still a bargain and good for the fish and game department.
I say use Idaho methods, less than $400 for the resident tag and nonres not allowed to apply. sounds reasonable to me!!

I'm in for a chance at areas 1-6, don't mind at all if the $5 is just a donation, but to be number 1 on the list would be cool!!! Looks to me if ya apply for area 7 the whole amount of $607 is upfront, correct?

Yes that is what i paid up front for myself. I put my dad in for the 1-6 area as a non-resident. If he draws i WILL find 6 grand somewhere! Hope someone we know draws it!

I will apply as an non res for the list hunt and hope I get lucky. I have no issue with paying more as a non res but do feel these prices are a little high based on what wy charges for other premium hunts ie sheep moose bison.
