Hi 4corn…that's a clever name.

Tell us about yourself.

That's a great first question, far better than when someone asks where to apply on their first post.

The general deer tags are good for a region. Within the region are specific units. Some units allow hunting during certain dates with the "general" tag, and different dates with the "limited" tag.

For example, I hunted a unit like that a few years ago. For that specific unit, the general license could hunt until October 14, then the limited tag was good from October 15-31 with the last few days catching some migrating, pre-rut deer. The limited license had far fewer hunters and was a much higher quality hunt.

A simple answer to your question is that very, very few LE units have a season that you can hunt in them with a Region tag. One I can think of right off the top of my head is 130.

Thanks for the help. Im from long island ny. I hunt mostly whitetails . Hunted wyoming by Newcastle this past fall on an outfitted antelope/mule deer hunt with 2 other friends. We all tagged out on both animals. We want to try to diy next. Musket man , I have that list. I guess I just didnt understand it. Thanks for clearing it up for me. The whole process of trying to figure out how to diy is very complicated. Ive printed out a stack of paper about 2 inches high. With maps, different area season dates, regulations, regular draw, special draw lists and reading different posts its hard to coordinate everything.

It can all be a bit overwhelming especially the first year or 2. To me one of the main things to consider is public land and access to it when choosing an area. Next is draw odds, herd counts, success rates, trophy potential, ect. I usually find all the units with the drawing odds range I am looking for, Then look at the public land in those units and basically use a process of elimination to narrow it down to units that offer what Im looking for.

here is my dilemma now. we have no preference points now. i was planning to pick a hard to draw unit as 1st choice then pick an easy to draw unit as 2nd choice so we get to hunt and get points. the problem is the only places we can draw with no points have limited public land, and i was considering a general tag for area y, but one of the other threads on this site seemed like the area is no good. so is it a waste of time to diy with no points?

Thats a good strategy for WY. Drawing odds in WY are usually directly related to public land and access and any area you can get 2nd choice will have some access issues but in many cases you can work around it and find places to hunt with some research. I think Y could be a decent 2nd choice hunt. There are a couple units in Y in the Bighorns that have good access that I think you could have a good hunt in.

Welcome to the forum 4corn.

It just depends. For the most part, NO. But there are a few areas that have both general hunting seasons, and limited draw hunting seasons in the same area. A general region tag allows you to hunt in any general hunting unit and season inside that region. You just have to check the G&F regulations to make sure.

Good luck and keep us posted on your success.
