Hello Guys and Gals,

I'm new to the forum and plan to contribute a lot. I'm always glad to help others and having lived and hunted my whole life in CO I can provide info for just about any hunt in CO if anyone were to ask. Glad to help.

I am asking your opinions on some elk units in WY. I have max points and am a hardcore bow hunter. I am looking at units 54/65, 58 or 63/64. If unsuccessful in the archery I will go back for a rifle hunt.

I have done my home work and have mapped out all of the public/private lands in the units in Google Earth. 63/64 seems to have plenty of public land. Does the public land in units 54/65 and 58 have good numbers of elk during the archery season or do they migrate in later after the snow flies?

I would be willing to pay a trespass fee to access good private ground. Other than knocking on doors is there a way to find out which landowners offer this?

Is one of these units above the others when it comes to trophy quality or are they pretty equal? Which would offer the best bow hunt?

I am open to other areas that you think would offer a high quality bow hunt. Any other units I should research?

Thank you for any advice you could offer. It is greatly appreciated.

Solo archery hunting in grizz country might be festive...
Exactly! I solo hunted sheep in that country but was packing a rifle and have been in prior grizzly encounters.

GOAT..you need to check out the new 2014 Wyoming regs. The NW corner of Wyoming has been remapped into three new elk units. Season dates and tag numbers have not really been defined yet. It will be an interesting year for those who decide to apply there.

Yep! I haven't looked at all the changes they made up there, but I see 65 no longer exists and 54 is now huge and they have divided it into Type 1 and 2 hunts which both open on 10/1. #1 is good for land south of the Clark's Fork River and #2 is good for the land north of it. Since the units are revamped there is really nothing to go by, so it may be a good year to apply for the area you want to hunt. It will be a real guessing game because the elk drawing for NRs will be well before the Final Regulations come out in the Spring with the tag numbers and closing dates assigned to the new units.

All of 65, East half of 121 and 50 merge into 54. Remainder of 121 merges to 53. Remainder of 50 goes to 51.
No more 50, no more 121.

do not put in for 58 if you want to archery hunt. The area there that you can pay a trespass fee for does not allow archery. Also, they charge $500 and that's where you want to go. Pm me when you have time.

Wow! Didn't see that coming. Guess I'd better check the unit maps every year before I start all my research. Thank you for the heads up guys!

Looks like I can hunt all of 54 with a Type 9. That might be an option. Opens up a bit more public land than before.

Any thoughts on 58 or 63/64?

kiddwinner- will be sending you a pm. Thank you!

No but if you zoom in close with a topo up on another window you can see the road/trails and stuff it follows. Good enough for a few weeks of Internet scouting till they post them.

yea, I looked but their GIS boundary files are still 2013. Seems odd they didn't put boundary desc. in the new book too. Guess they'll do that when the full season stuff comes out.
