WY Deer Tag Prices in MRS

Looks like a typo. I saw it as well and chalked it up to likely using the elk table and modifying it for the deer hunt areas as I believe those are the bull elk prices for nonres.

There's lots of stuff like that. When I was looking at the success rates for Utah antelope, I noticed the column was titled "billy success rate". Looking at the tables on the first page for AZ, the preference point cost is listed at $7.50. It hasn't been $7.50 since 2013. The early rifle elk season for units 1/2B/2C is incorrectly labeled as 1/2B/3C.

Those are just off the top of my head. Maybe I'll start making a list.

The two typos you mentioned are of the same type - incorrect column headers on main tables. The potential for that error mainly comes from us building about 60 all new MRS tables this year, not to mention the dozens of new side charts.

I do a lot of the work with the tables and charts and am also the one who proofreads them. If you've ever tried to proofread your own stuff you know it's easy to miss things.

So, while several people look over every page of the issue before it goes to print, I will have someone in addition to myself specifically look at the tables and charts, especially the headings. The fact that we have egg on our face twice over on the same type of error will make that issue stick in our heads pretty well, if you know what I mean.

See? - Your feedback does help us improve the magazines. Thanks.

Yea that's definitely a problem. If the Eastman's want to produce a better magazine and provide a better product, they really need to get a fresh set of eyes that has absolutely nothing to do with writing the magazine to do some proofreading. There should be at least 1 person, and maybe 2 people proofreading.

And I don't mean in any way to say that you aren't capable of catching mistakes. It's like you said, it's much tougher to catch mistakes when you're proofreading your own stuff.

You're right. We actually do have other people looking things over but they trust me too much, I think, when it comes to content that I have worked on, which is quite a bit these days.

I asked some people here why they didn't catch my errors and was told that because I started as the proofreader and the final word on the printed copy a couple years ago they figured if Dave went over it, it's good. Uh oh!

So, I have asked someone else to take special care to look over my MRS work as a fresh set of eyes. They are very good and that should solve that issue when it comes to my own content.

Thanks for your feedback.

One simple technique we used to use in engineering and proof reading drawings and documents was a green and red highlighter. As every single fact was checked it was marked in either green (OK) or red (WRONG). Then after the changes were made, the corrected copy was again checked against this marked up copy. As a result we nearly never made an error on thousands of manually entered numbers. Just a thought. One error on a mold tool for example and you'd be out thousands of dollars, so accuracy was critical.

Yep, that was a type left over from the Elk Table. The prices on the chart at the front of the Wyoming MRS are the correct costs. Same as last year. Thanks for the catch though. I got it changed in the master file for next year. Damn cut and paste is a killer sometimes. -G
