I always pick up a wolf tag just incase, but this year I'm seriously considering an actual all out wolf hunt. with elk out of the way and hopefully a fast deer hunt in October I should have extra vacation time to look for a wolf and remove it from the Idaho wilderness. (dependent on how sons hunts go) anyone on here killed one before? I don't recall seeing pics?? this could turn into an annual Eastman members activity..... big wall tents with stoves, and snowmobiles, just sounds like fun. any advice?

I happen to be great friends with the gentleman in charge of wolf control for all of Minnesota. Based on some discussions with him....

If you can, set-up a bait station and hunt over it. May need to add calling to the mix.

Being in an area where wolves are known to frequent then walking/driving to call locations. And call. Similar to hunting coyotes.

Most likely the wolves will come in as a pack so be prepared for that. And make sure your down wind side is protected as they will want to circle.

when you say call? what are you meaning. Sound like a coyote?, or a wolf or prey the wolf preys on? I would be curious as to what sounds you are referring to when you say try calling.

I have howled back and forth with a pack, before. I just ran out of daylight when one came in. but as far as cold calling, I don't know where to start( as in what I should sound like.) I have them around me, I have bumped into them and fair amounts of trail cam shots.

You will have to see what works on a given day. I know my buddies bag of tricks is big. He will try mouth howling, turkey calls, or just about any animal in distress call (rabbit, fawn, etc).

I know they are some smart buggers. Last fall I killed my Idaho bull on the first day. I then spent the next 2 and a half weeks trying to kill a wolf. I would hear them every day, see their tracks. But never once seen one. I know I was close several times, having them howl within 200 yds. I did not attempt calling.

I will be back at it in about 50 days. We hunt the Salmon zone.

haha fried wolf finger steaks!! baiting is not allowed. you can "incidentally" shoot a wolf that comes to a bear bait site but no actual bait for the big dog, and bear season closes end of October.
